I often see specs for plasma, LCD, DLP, etc, touting xxxx:1 contrast ratio. But I don't think I've ever seen this spec mentioned for a CRT.

So what would the contrast ratio be for a good CRT?

    Just curious.....[IMG]

The reason you hardly ever see this spec with a CRT is because it's so high. Apparently, the on/off CR of most CRTs is so high, that it can be difficult to measure the lower end. Basically, it's higher than any other technology.

On/Off CR is a good measure of lower black level. It gives you a good idea of how the contrast will look with dark material.

If you're interested in ANSI CR (which is different from on/off) that's a different story. I think my CRT front projector has an ANSI CR of about 150:1. Many digitals actually have better ANSI CR than CRTs do.

ANSI CR is a good measure of the ability of the display to not wash out dark areas when there is a good chunk of bright material nearby. It gives you a good idea of how the contrast will look with relatively bright material.

    Greetings

When measured correctly, the contrast ratio of most CRT devices tend to be between 150 to 250:1 ...

And since DLP and LCD and other digital displays do not measure their CR the proper way, comparisons of the actual CR number are rather meaningless.

Some high end CRTs can have contrast ratio of more than 30,000:1.

It depends what kind of CR measurement you're talking about...

    Very interesting.

I wonder what the numbers would be if you measured a good CRT against a good DLP, LCD, or plasma using the "proper" method?

    Greetings

That's a good question. I'll make sure to do a "proper" reading off a DLP/LCD the next time I see one ... (This week some time)
