It's my aim to keep a list of films that are currently available (or announced) on DVD which are only available in a modified version rather than their original aspect ratio. I will add films as they are announced and as people notify me of omissions I'm sure to make. I will remove films if they are released in their OAR. Hopefully this can become a reference list for titles that need to be revisited and lobbied for.

    - I began going through IMDB but found errors in the early part of "B" so decided not to.
    - I have not listed Stanley Kubrick films. I am one who wants them in their original theatrical aspect ratio, but this is a controversial subject even here based on his apparent preference. If you think I should include them, let me know.
    - If there is a current Studio and Manufacturer feedback thread about a film listed here, or you make one, I will modify the title to link to that thread.
    - If you've already posted a film for listing and remember another, create a new post. I can only guarantee that I'll read any given post once.
Let me know what I've missed and I'll add it.

    Add the following.

    The Jerk (1978)

    The Front Page (1974)

You can remove Caddyshack. This disc was re-release last year with an anamorphic widescreen presentation.

I'm sure that I'll think of more.

I was just thinking about starting a thread like this myself!

A couple of weeks ago at Best Buy, they had a "3 for $15" bin of WB snappers. I picked up Deathtrap, The Great Santini, and The Postman Always Rings Twice. It wasn't until I was halfway home that I realized they were full frame. But after doing a little research, I couldn't find any evidence of widescreen editions for these titles.

So add those three, and I'd be willing to bet that all of the other snappers in that bin were full-frame only as well. Unfortunately, the only other title I can remember right now is South Central (full-frame only).

Airport 1975 was released widescreen by Goodtimes so unless we're talking about a little bit missing, it shouldn't belong on the list. Another Universal/Goodtimes title that does belong is the 1978 Charlton Heston sub flick, "Gray Lady Down."

The Sopranos seasons 1 and 2 were originally broadcast in full screen, but the DVDs show them both in the widescreen presentation used in their repeat broadcasts.

    Does that count?

If a recent television program was broadcast in 1.33 and the DVD is provided at 16x9 it is my beleif that this title was created in that format. This is true of Stargate, Sopranos, and the upcoming X-files season 5.

The OAR in the topic is more intention than original broadcast.

    Cross Of Iron - 4:3 P&S iso 1.85:1

Anatomy Of A Murder - 4:3 (open matte?) iso 1.85:1

    Yojimbo Criterion - +/- 2.1:1 iso 2.35:1

    Sanjuro Criterion - +/- 2.1:1 iso 2.35:1

A lot of recent R1 MGM classic releases look also like they are cropped to 1.66:1 iso 1.85:1 (especially noticable in the credits which sometimes are cut off!)

    Some Like It Hot

    The Misfits

    Inherit The Wind

    The Defiant Ones

    Witness For The Prosecution

    Topkapi

One wonders why MGM does not release these in 1.85:1 anamorphic on R1 - Some Like It Hot and The Misfits both are 1.85:1 anamorphic on R2.
