Well, what do you think they'd say? "No"?!

I don't take this to be overly positive at all, but at least it's better than no comment.

I was at a vendor trade show this past weekend. (I am a music sales rep and a large retailer held a Vendor Expo for their music, book, & movie reps).

I met a Columbia/TriStar sales rep and I was telling him about the online controversy and he had no idea that these titles were full-frame only. He seemed genuinely surprised.

Don't forget that it's possible that some of these so-called "Full Frame" titles may actually be "P&S ON-THE-FLY" titles. If the box states "Anamorphic Full Frame", then that's what it means.
    http://www.dvdangle.com/articles/dvd_101/index.html
This process will provide a 1.78:1 anamorphic presentation for a 16:9 set, a cropped and zoomed 4:3 presentation on a legacy 4:3 set, or a 1.78:1 downconverted letterboxed presentation; all depending on the setting in the DVD players' DISPLAY menu.
While 1.78:1 is not the proper OAR for some of these titles, it's pretty darn close. And at least the anamorphic enhancement is still there for the 16:9 owners.
(Of course, if CTS has "locked-out" the LBX option, then only 16:9 owners will get the 1.78:1 transfer. If that's the case, then many legacy 4:3 owners are still "up the creek" with these transfers.)

All I can say about that is Holy Crap!

And I hadn't even forwarded to their attention yet as I was going to wait until we had a few more names.

That wasa a quick response, much quicker than the one from Blockbuster. This is positive and I expect to see some results. Rain, great job.

THe same problem came up with Criterion's Last Temptation of Christ. So many people have not set up their players properly it's not funny. They need to put notes on the boxes what to do, and manufacturers need to stop shipping players that default to 16:9 until there is an 80-85% penetration of 16:9 televisions

Rain, do you think it would be appropriate for you to contact Enrique Rivero (the author of the article cited) and discuss the petition and its history and intent?

It might be an opportunity to get a bit more publicity for the petition while also setting the record straight about what is (and isn't) being asked for. In addition, Mr Rivero, if he's interested/sympathetic, may as a journalist be able to get answers from Columbia that they won't give the rest of us.

It's just a thought: I figure if anyone talks to him, it should be you, since it's your petition.

All I've got to say to Columbia is don't look too long and DO SOMETHING about the matter. I will not buy Pan & Scan releases....plain and simple![IMG]

All this and we still do not have an official statement from Columbia on whether these are fullscreen or pan and scan on the fly. Let's not break our arms clapping Columbia on the back just yet.

I really hope that C/TS continues doing OAR, especially for familiy and low brow titles. They've yet to release one of my favorite childhood films, "Radio Flyer" which I refuse to see again until it's in its OAR, so I really hope they don't continure Panning and scanning.

We need to pick our battles, and getting on studios for making 1.85 films go 1.78 I couldn't be LESS interested in.

Let's hope these titles end up coming out widescreen.
