Am I correct to assume that this is just for straight melodramas? No adventure/mystery/horror/comedy-dramas need apply?

I'll nominate:

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Gone With the Wind
The Grapes of Wrath
On the Waterfront
A Streetcar Named Desire

I'll second:

12 Angry Men

Yes, I'd like to stick to straight melodrama. Hopefully the thirding process will weed out any noms that don't fit. :)

Lew, The Grapes of Wrath had not been seconded so your third counts as a second.

FWIW, I agree with you on The Searchers - it's as much a drama as it is a western. The same goes for Stalag 17 and Paths of Glory being war dramas. Still, let's see if they make it in... :)

Edit: Chuck answered my question on POG.

Inherit the Wind

Would you consider Kind Hearts and Coronets for this? Several excellent performances by Alec Guinness but I think it was made in England. I would understand if you do not think it was Hollywood enough though.

George: You Can't Take It With You hadn't been seconded (my mistake) so your third counts as a second. However, since it was my mistake, consider that second a freebie. :)

Jen: I'll fudge the rules a bit and add KHAC to the noms list. I'll let the others decide if they want it in. :)

It seems we've quickly gotten away from straight drama but I guess I can live with that. :)

That said, I've given it some thought and decided to toss Kind Hearts and Coronets and The Red Shoes. Sorry to be a waffler, but let's stick to Hollywood productions at least.

Okay, where's a second for Dodsworth? Where's Rain when ya need him?
