WHV recently discontinued the DVD release of The Magnificent Ambersons. Its unusual to get a discontinuance only a year after release. The question is why? I can think of the following explanations:
    1. WHV will release a 70th Anniversary blu/dvd combo
    2. Repackage the DVD as a 70th Anniversary release
    3. They only printed a limited number of DVDs to promote Citizen Kane; copies all gone from the warehouse and no further releases planned

Are you sure about it being discontinued? It seems to be alive and well on Amazon right now, presently priced at $10.97, sold directly by Amazon.

Maybe it was temporarily out of stock. I've had that happen with things I'm looking at.

'The Magnificent Ambersons' is (still?) available on WBShop --
    http://www.wbshop.com/product/magnificent+ambersons+the+1000202178.do?sortby=ourPicks&from=Search

Yet, there are no results for 'Ambersons' on WarnerBros.com --
    http://www.warnerbros.com/search?start=0&q=ambersons

This may be the cheapest price shipped --

Hopefully a Blu-Ray version is imminent as Warner Bros has supposedly been working on this since 2003.

With bonus materials surpassing the ones on the Laser-Disc edition
    http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/00989/CC1109L/Magnificent-Ambersons-The:-Special-Edition-%281942%29

Sadly, a Blu-Ray edition with bonus features wasn't released for the 70th anniversary of the release date of 'The Magnificent Ambersons': July 10, 1942

Hopefully Warner Bros doesn't wait until the 75th anniversary for a Blu-Ray edition.

There still may be an announcement. There's 6 months left.

Warner's just needs to license it to someone like Criterion. Their treatment of Ambersons up to now has been abysmal.

Yes, it was discontinued. A guy named mcarver has a list on DVDTalk (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/529443-out-print-titles-recently-discovered-2nd-thread-36.html), and Magnificent Ambersons was listed last week. I am not sure where he gets his information from, but he's quite accurate. He picked up on the canceled release of the 1953 Titanic while Amazon was still taking preorders. Being discontinued does not mean that there is not still stock out there somewhere. I think it just means that the distributer is no longer accepting general wholesale orders. Sometimes studios discontinue releases, then rerelease them later. I have held off buying Ambersons hoping that a blu would be issued at some point, but I am not sure what to do now. I suppose, that if Ambersons is not announced before the end of September, it won't come out at all.

I didn't buy it either because I have the Criterion laserdisc which I still find eminently watchable, and I, too, wanted to wait for a better release.

Oh, and thanks for the reminder about the 1953 Titanic. Hate to say it, but I'd forgotten all about it. Whatever happened with that??

    Better than what?
I'm sure the DVD is better than the laserdisc.

And the Blu-ray that should've accompanied the DVD's release would surely be better still.

Hopefully a BLU. But yes, the DVD should look better than the LD.

The DVD was only a hair better than the laserdisc, IMO. And the laserdisc had the superb commentary by Robert Carringer.
I remember a couple of years ago that there were internet rumors about the "missing footage" possibly turning up, and Warner producing a new remastered version of Ambersons. The missing footage rumors were scotched pretty quickly; but I could swear that there were reports of a new "deluxe" version of the regular cut. I guess the barely-better-than-laserdisc barbones DVD was it.

Titanic is supposed to be released later this year to coincide with the release of the 1997 Titanic.

You might ask Lou (who wrote that column for the NY Post) himself for an update on the situation in this thread.
