I'm glad that they're working out for you. None of the titles that you mentioned are of more than passing interest to me. I would've picked up Casino, except for the 2-sided issue. I have interest in "The Deer Hunter", "The Sting", & "To Kill A Mockingbird" which are coming out later this year, but I have a sneaking suspicion that they're all going to be flippers also, which means that I'll have take a pass on those titles also.

Universal has screwed up too many titles, and they're track record is a mess even on major titles "Jurassic Park", "Back to the Future", "ET", "Schindler's List", etc...,etc..., so I'm always hesitant to pick up their discs, let alone when they're double-sided. There have been countless threads about double-sided discs (Especially Universal's) skipping. My biggest problem with this, is that I rarely watch new purhcases within the 30 day return window. More often than not, I'm simply not in the mood for that particular film, and it goes on the shelf until I am. With Universal discs, I feel obligated to watch it immediately, and in that case I'll just rent.

I want to give them my money, but I can't justify it.

Have you all seen the R2 SE of Casino?

Looks amazing. For some reason Universal here in Britain never seems to release double-sided discs, Magnum PI/Miami Vice were both released on double-siders in R1 but they got the one-sided treatment here in R2. For once it pays off to live in R2 land :D

WOW! I would've bought that in a second. Instead, I will not have Casino on my shelf. Oh well, I only had minor interest in the title, and it's Universal that's out the cash.

The Casino disc is a good effort IMO. The new transfer is pleasing; not outstanding, but still very good (visible edge halos are probably my biggest gripe with it). The sound mix was a bit below par, as I found that the audio levels of the dialogue and voice-overs varied noticably, sometimes in mid-sentence.

And I just wanna say that in six years of DVD collecting I've never had a problem with a double sided-disc. This Casino re-release gets a :emoji_thumbsup: from me.

Although I'll be picking this one up for $14.99 at Costco 'cuz I love the movie, fwiw Doug I wouldn't agree with this. Disappointingly, none of this recent spate of Universal re-releases include DTS and, in the case of 12 Monkeys, there are no new supps on the re-release. The new Casino even drops the trailer.

I'm watching the 'Casino : 10th Anniversary Edition' right
now and this new transfer is just wonderful!!! The colors
are vastly more rich than the previous edition and I didn't
find Robert Richardson's overexposed shots to be much
different than the VHS, laserdisc, or first DVD releases.
If anything, I thought this transfer was much sharper and
this has been cleaned up a great deal! GREAT transfer!!!
I found the documentaries to be very interesting and I was
surprised they totaled to nearly an hour in length, but I
wished they could've been even longer and the
behind-the-scenes footage seemed to be in great condition
leading me to wonder if they could've had a separate
feature with just that footage!!! Eye-on-the-wall, high
quality footage of a Scorsese production would've been
fantastic!!! A lot of people who've been attacking the
commentary fail to point out that while some of the
comments are from the documentaries...A GREAT DEAL more
details are given and totally new stories/opinions than
can be found on the documentaries! Overall, this was A LOT
BETTER than the fluff-filled 'Aviator' DVD that I hated!
Oh, the audio "problems" with the narration might
have something to do with the way in which they were
originally recorded...I think I recall the same
differences in the audio levels in the first DVD
and VHS versions.
You can pick this up for $13.99 at CC stores
throughout the country for this week only!

Based on the reviews I will have to pick this one up. Yes I wish it was a 2 disc set but if I want to enjoy the movie it is going to have to be a 2 sider.

Want a 2-disc set? Buy 2 of 'em and make your own labels! :) I can't glue my 2-disc sets together and make a 2-sider!

Oddly, the display of Casino at my local mart says it is a 2 disc special edition. Was it planned as a 2 disc and then changed to a dual?? This advertising seems to suggest that to me.

Sounds like a stupid cost-cutting move by Universal. Oh well, there cost-cutting move stopped my purchase.

Sounds like an efficient use of the media by Universal ;)

Back on topic, I was just blown away from the transfer of Casino. I was a little worried by the screen shots on the comparison web site, I didn't notice much of a difference. When I actually sat down an watched, I was amazed by the detail in faces, clothes and hair. Something I usually don't see in a Super35 release.

And to all those no disc art, DVD18 haters, Universal made it nice and easy to now which side to play. Nice addition of adding a sub ring text!

And like the other member mentioned, at ~ $12.99, just buy 2 copies and make your own artwork ;)

That has almost nothing to do with why I hate these discs, and I think it's pretty low on most other people's lists for this also. You seem to be picking up one reason, and using that against everyone.

Eric,
I am all for everyone having an opinion.
It just bugs me that it is assumed that everyone hates DVD18 and that isn't the case.

I've stated all my reasons many times.
I don't want 2 of something, when I can have one.
I see no value of having 2 discs.
I also don't buy the mfg defect argument, I've heard that since Terminator 2.

I haven't checked but I think my In Living Color season 3 set is all DVD18s, not one problem with all the discs I played.
Also, I forgot Giant from my list, not a problem and in that case, it saved it from being a 3 disc set!

We can just agree to disagree.

And on the disc art, after the "manufacturing defects" pitch gets thrown, that one always comes next.
In my own cynical mind, I believe that is the number one reason why people want 2 discs, next to thinking they are getting more for their buck.

I'll let this thread get back to Casino now ;)

There's been plenty of defective single-sided DVDs too- they should just stop making them period I guess? ;)

The thread seems to be side tracked...

Haven't checked out the extras yet, but the transfer is wonderfully done, and with the exception of some dialogue issues, the sound is nice too. Definitely worth picking up:emoji_thumbsup:

Name one! I have never heard of a single sided disc with a manufacturing defect (outside of scratches or glue, or something that is simply sloppy quality control. I've purchased nearly 1000 DVDs, and have never had a problem with a SS disc, yet 50% of the double-sided discs that I've purchased have been a nightmare. (I'm probably just lying about that though!)

Mike,
The extras are very nice.
The deleted scenes were a little short for my liking. They seem more like extended scenes and bloopers than deleted ones.
I haven't checked out everything but I would love, for prosperity sake, to see the uncut, eye popping scene that was cut for the MPAA.
