also, anyone know what's the status with WKW's 2046? I recall several interviews/mentions of 2046 being ready in time for Cannes :frowning:

All the above comes from the folks at the Criterion boards, so don't blame me if it's wrong:

2046 may never be ready. The cinematographer died recently and it's been in the works for so long that there doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm left among the cast and crew. It's still filming but Wong apparently plans to take a hiatus soon to shoot a 30-minute short film. After that he may either pick up where he left off or start again from scratch (which apparently he's already done at least once). Evidently Wong has floated the idea of actually retitling the film 3030; given that the year in the original title is pretty significant to the plot (the film is supposed to take place the year before Hong Kong becomes a part of China proper), a change like that would probably mean that 2046 as we know it is dead and buried. But that's just one possiblity -- it may not turn out like that.

Incidentally, the official site for Dogville is up (kinda) with a trailer (kinda). dvdane at the Criterion boards translates the Danish text at the beginning as follows: "In the winter of 2002 Lars von Trier began shooting his latest film. The film was shot far away from seachlights of public. To ease the sensation of isolation a 'confession chair' was installed few meters from the studio. A little room with a red button which actives a video camera. The box stood available 24 hours a day."

Regarding "2046," isn't Christopher Doyle the cinematographer? I read that they just aren't finished filming yet and the CG work hasn't begun.

I think it's the category for movies submitted for the main competition that the festival powers-that-be didn't think were good enough, but were still good enough to warrant inclusion in the festival (as opposed to "Out of Competition" films, which aren't submitted for the competition). But I could be wrong here.

Has anyone heard anything about this film? I liked Buffalo '66 quite a bit and it will be interesting to see what kind of film Gallo this time. IIRC the feelings were a little mixed around here in regard to Buffalo '66.

Not being a huge fan of Gallo I haven't really kept up, but apparently there's a "graphic oral sex scene" between him and Chloe Sevigny. Although that's probably pretty passe to the Cannes crowd by this point.

I wonder if Dogville has any shot at the Best Pix Oscar now. No boost from Cannes can't be good for it.

I guess Elephant is a documentary, is that correct? If so I would think it would be a lock for one of the 5 doc nominations.
