    ABOUT NEED FOR SPEED:

Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, DreamWorks Pictures’ Need for Speed captures the thrills of the game in a real-world setting. An exciting return to the great car-culture films of the 1960s and ‘70s, when authenticity brought a new level of intensity to the action, Need for Speed taps into what makes the American myth of the open road so enticing.

The story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country race against time — one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. In a last attempt to save his struggling garage, blue-collar mechanic Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul) — who with his team skillfully builds and races muscle cars on the side — reluctantly partners with wealthy, arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). Just as a major sale to a car broker Julia Bonet (Imogen Poot) looks like it will save the business, a disastrous, unsanctioned race results in Dino framing Tobey for manslaughter.

Two years later and fresh out of prison, Tobey is set on revenge with plans to take down Dino in the high-stakes De Leon race — the Super Bowl of underground racing. To get there in time, Tobey must run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet, dodging cops coast-to-coast and dealing with fallout from a dangerous bounty Dino put on his car. With his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia as allies, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.

No Blu-ray 3D release? This was released theatrically in 3D.

Disney is doing the US theatrical and home video distribution -- wonder if this is a new thing for them to skimp on the 3D release. Would be the second time they've done that this year (so far).

Ron -- do you have any contacts you could politely ask (if it's appropriate to do so) about the lack of a Blu-ray 3D release on this title?

I'm sure this isn't going to be the Best Picture winner this year, but regardless, Disney used to be among the best at putting out BD3D titles, and this is their second BD release this year where there's no 3D disc for what was released in theaters as a 3D movie. Their sudden shift is puzzling.

    Josh,

Don't take this as gospel. An inside source is telling me that a
3D version could very well be forthcoming.

Disney/Buena Vista distribution of "physical" Blu-ray 3D media releases for the U.S. are becoming a past memory. If you want a region-A BD 3D of Need For Speed there will be one available in Brazil that will be released by Disney on July 23, and I've read rumors of another possible version for release in Mexico.

That's just an assumption. NEED FOR SPEED has no official announcement yet. And FROZEN 3D is coming out in October, apparently

Report of a Disney/Buena Vista distribution official announcement for a USA Need For Speed 2D version came on May 16, for an August 5th release. There has been no official announcement for a Frozen 3D release, only a Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment email to a fan of a "tentative" planned 3D version this fall" and a hopeful corroboration report from an internet site.
