Thi,

It is common to both learn and play on light and extra-light strings.

On my Carvin Bolt (Stratocaster style) guitar I play 9-42's.

On my Les Paul I play 10-46's.

I think I'll make the switch to extra-light then. Any particular brand I should get or avoid?

I use Dean Markley 9-42s on most of my electrics, and D'Addarios on the acoustics. I would avoid going any lighter than a nine, as 8s have a tendency to be erratic at holding pitch, and break easier. Also, the lighter the string, the easier it is to bend them out of tune with too much finger pressure. I would avoid house brands, although they may be okay. Try a brand and see how you like them, you can always change to another later.

You could ask thirty people about their guitar string preferences and get thirty different answers :D

That being said, I'm quite partial to the nickel Rotosounds...

For acoustics, it's Elixirs, hands-down...
