Brook, obviously since you prefer Ikiru over M, M isn't your choice for the best Criterion in your collection. Just curious, what your choice would be? My top choice of yours would be Sullivan's Travels.
I'm toying with the idea of doing a version of this, but it would only be 32 films, and a very different sampling of the Criterion library.
A fine idea Brook—the more so as there was finally a tournament where I could vote.
I too am a bit surprised at the outcome, but it is not as though M is a bad film or even an average one. It makes my ‘masterpiece’ list, so even though perhaps not all masterpieces are created equal, I can’t really be displeased with the result.
George, Ikiru would be my #1 since I usually place it at #3 on my all-time list.
My ranking would be
1. Ikiru 2. Tokyo Story 3. The Seventh Seal 4. The Passion Of Joan Of Arc 5. Sullivan's Travels
I usually place all 5 of these in my all-time top 10.
The next 5 would be 8 1/2, M, That Obscure Object Of Desire, Fear Eats The Soul, and Ordet in an order that would probably change based on which I saw most recently.
I don't own a single Madacy title. My wife mistakenly bought me some years ago, but I returned them.
I could put together a 16 title Anchor Bay tournament but it would consist entirely of Argento, Romero, Raimi and Werner Herzog. I might be able to make it to 32 if I included all my son's Thomas the Tank Engine DVD's.
After Criterion, I'd say Warner Bros. is the next largest producer in my collection. But I don't know if it would be worthwhile to have a tournament for them since 2001 or Dr. Strangelove would likely win.
I could put together a pretty good Fox/Lorber/Wellspring tournament, but the voting might be a bit sparse.
