Like I said I have a Song Wega 34" CRT Tube HDTV. It can do 480p, 720p, and 1080i. I'm not interesting in HDVD or Blu-Ray, becuase they're both hella expensive (even more than my tv) and they don't have any movies I'm interested in anyways.

I'm just wondering what DVD player can I buy to get the best possible picture quality out of my big collection of DVDs? So far I've tried the Philips DVP5960 and Sony DVPNS75H upconverting players. If there's something better than these at a reasonable price, I will take the Sony back again and rebuy. I will only go to higher priced model though, if there will actually be some kind of improvement in picture.

I have noticed that Progressive Scan with component cables out of the Sony looks crappy compared to the HDMI upconverting out of the Sony, so I don't think I want to downgrade to a progressive scan only player. I'm not sure which player produced better upoconverting yet, but the Philips definitely has an easier to use menu, although it also has no on-off button on the player or eject button on the controller. >_< The Sony has those, but you actually have to stop the DVD to switch between HDMI modes, unlike the Philips. >_> The things I care about most are in this order:

    1. Picture quality
    2. Easy to use interface with menus and remote control
    3. Quality of JPEG viewing and JPEG navigation menus

Thank you for any help ahead of time. [IMG]

Oppo 970HD. I don't think you will find better PQ than that at your price point.

You can pick up a 20G PS3 for $500 and have a solid BluRay player.

I agree the 970 would be a good choice.

Yeah, I think I want to get an Opppo. But would getting an OPDV971H instead of the 970HD be worth the extra 50 bucks? Would there be a noticeable improvement in picture quality on my 34" CRT over the 970HD?
