Best place to honeymoon in the Caribbean? (1 Viewer)

I am getting married at the end of April and my fiance and I are thinking of taking a honeymoon in the caribbean. We were considering St. Johns. If anyone has been to the caribbean and could provide some insight it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'll be going to St. John in 11 days and have been going there during the winter on a regular basis for many years. An extremely beautiful and quiet little island. Whether you'd like it depends on what you're looking for. It's like a very small town in a gorgeous setting with a number of very nice open air restaurants, but not much in the way of exciting night life. Very low key. Relatively unspoiled, much nicer than St. Thomas, in my opinion (and much less crime), and still part of the U.S. which is nice. I absolutely love it there. Did you have any particular accomodations in mind?

I don't know much about the rest of the Caribbean as obviously there are many other beautiful islands to be found there. If you have any questions about St. John though, I'll be happy to answer them as best I can.

I'd love to hear where you'd recommend to stay on St. Johns? I've snorkled at St. Johns while on a cruise, but never stayed there. Is there anything else you'd recommend to do while you are staying there besides snorkling?

I second that. IMO, you CANNOT beat the value of a cruise. My wife and I took a Princess 7-day Eastern Carribean cruise and it was absolutely wonderful. We booked a mini-suite with a balcony. The trip could not have been any better. The Grand Princess stopped in St. Maarten and St. Thomas and Princess Cays. We took an excursion over to Trunk Bay for some wonderful snorkling. We will be going back for our 3 year anniversary this year hopefully. We cannot recommend this enough. In fact, when my brother got married, he and his bride actually sailed on the same ship and had a wonderful experience as well.

I second the cruise option. I went on my first cruise last year. LOVED it! Hassle free, relaxing, tons of things to do and the food was out of this world.. Going again this year.

That wasn't my experience at all. The food was OK on my cruise, I'd use the word "sufficient" to describe it. I know some people love cruise food, and they do work very hard to make it as good as possible, but I've done enough backpacking to recognize the taste and texture of dehydrated - rehydrated food, and they serve a -lot- of it.

My wife and I went to St. Thomas for our honeymoon last year, and we took a day trip to St. John. It was much more quaint that St. Thomas, more laid back. We went on a tour of the island and also did some snorkeling. It was an amazing trip!

I'd suggest a hotel on St. Kitts called Ottley's Plantation. It is a very romantic spot, an old plantation house turned into an inn. The deluxe rooms have small private swimming pools overlooking the ocean. The restaurant is one of the best in the Carribean, and it and the main pool are built into the ruins of the old sugar cane factory. It all looks like somethng out of a travel magazine. The staff and the owners are friendly, and the service is elegant without being fussy.

It's a great place for a "do nothing" vacation. St. Kitts is one of the less touristy islands, but does now have a casino, and there is a bar called The Walls, in the capitol city of Basse Terre, that is rated as one of the best in the world. If I had to pick one vacation I could do every year, it would be to spend time at Ottley's.

Santo Domingo is pretty cool. It is the oldest city in the "new world" and very reasonable.
When movies want to show pre-Castro Cuba they go there to film. We rode around in a horse drawn carriage and saw the castle where Columbus' brother ruled.
If you don't want to bake the whole time and see nothing but tourists check it out.

I go away every month in the winter. I try something diffrent each time.
I'm off to Cancun with the boys next week then the Mayan Riveria with my girlfriend on Feb 20th.

The budget places are the Dominican Republic and Cuba.
If you want to get fancier and nicer, then places like Jamaica, St Lucia etc.

If your going on Budget and to Cuba then go to Varadero. If your going to the Dominican....the Punta Cana side is much nicer then Porta Plata.

You should look into the Mayan Riveria in Mexico...breathtaking.

If you're back from your St. John trip, how was it? I'm going there in 3 days with my girlfriend. Can't wait!

I have plenty of info I found on web, but I was wondering if you could recommend the quiet private beaches the locals treasure. Seems that everyone is directed to Trunk bay, so it can take the abuse of the tourists while saving some other the other even prettier beaches for the locals.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

I took an Eastern Carribean Cruise via Princess about 2 years ago and here are my experiences:

1. The food is quite good if you stick to the man restaurant. You don't have to schedule a time frame to eat either but formal attire is required. This is different than most cruise lines. There are of course bad ones and good ones too. If you end up going to the other restaurants or the overpriced steak place, then I would rank the overall food experience as average. If you stick to the nice restaurant all the time, then I'd rate it excellent.

A cruise is a nice way to see all the islands and then decide which ones you like the best. For me the best island was St Maarten. This is the island I would go back for sure. The others didn't excite me as much.

As far as the other islands here are my thoughts:
1. Barbados: Awesome snorkeling catamaran trip but the island was nasty once you went into the interior parts.

2. St Lucia: Overrated. You'll get horded by beggars all the time it seems. I didn't feel safe here at all.

3. St Maarten: My favorite by a long shot.

4. Virgin Gorda/BVI: quaint place but super expensive. Very quiet here. One of the nicest for sure.

5. ST Thomas: Bustling with excitement. A few great beaches. More american than anything.

Having sold travel I have some experience with the others as well:
Pretty much describes it to a T. I wasn't a huge fan of St John but it requires a certain type of person.

Another bustling place if you like it is Aruba. Lots of nice beaches, no hurricanes and lots of fun there.

Well, I'm back from St. John. Left frigid New England behind and soon forgot that the rest of the world wasn't in shorts and t-shirts all day.

Matt R., check your e-mail-- I sent you info and a few pictures taken during the trip. God, what a beautiful island!
As for out of the way beaches, the north shore beaches are beautiful, easily accessible, and thus tend to be more crowded, but still less than you would expect. We like Frances Bay, which is the most eastern one along the north shore, next to Maho Bay. Snorkel offshore just a little, heading to the right, and look for the sea turtles grazing on the sea grass. They don't seem to mind too much if you keep a slight distance.

The most isolated beaches I haven't been to recently. That would include Salt Pond. You take the very vertiginous, curving, center line road across the island to Coral Bay then head south. It's a bit of a walk down to the beach (don't leave valuables in your car) and there's not much shade. Due to its privacy it had become somewhat the topless beach the last time I was there. If you drive a little further around to the south shore, you can get to Lameshur Bay. Very nice. Good snorkelling, and four-wheel drive is a must. Because it's out of the way, it's usually not crowded at all. Hope that's useful. You'll have a great time!

Your best bet would be to plan on a 1 year, 5 year, or lifetime cruise...

Once you get there, you are not going to want to come back in a week...
