...for me, a musical contains songs with words that the actors sing.Is Magnolia a musical?
No, Magnolia is not a musical because I said songs, just having 1 song sung by characters in the film doesn't cut it.So, if they had sung just one more song, then Magnolia would have qualified as a musical, by your definition.
I think 'musical' implies that the songs and their performance are tied directly to the narrative and advance it or comment on it. Does one such song/performance a musical make? I'm not sure.

I also don't consider movies like Saturday Night Fever, Fame, or Urban Cowboy, musicals. Music is an integral part of the film, but the actors are not performing the songs or singingAs much as I want to get The Red Shoes in (on the musical theory), I agree with Brook.
Taken literally, many of the films he cites are Melodramas.
