I didn't realize there was a western genre when I listed High Noon for 50's Drama. If there is a western genre than please switch High Noon to:

The Seventh Seal (which actually I should have had there in the first place)

I don't consider The Red Shoes to be a musical because for me, a musical contains songs with words that the actors sing.

Ok, let me change push Great Expectations out of the drama slot and put The Red Shoes in (edit made). I think I'll still reserve The Maltese Falcon for the mystery/thriller category though.

There's a mystery category??? Clearly I didn't read this very carefully. :b

Ok switch out The Maltese Falcon for

40's Drama
Citizen Kane

Angelo, No, Magnolia is not a musical because I said songs, just having 1 song sung by characters in the film doesn't cut it. I also don't consider movies like Saturday Night Fever, Fame, or Urban Cowboy, musicals. Music is an integral part of the film, but the actors are not performing the songs or singing.

So, if they had sung just one more song, then Magnolia would have qualified as a musical, by your definition.

I think 'musical' implies that the songs and their performance are tied directly to the narrative and advance it or comment on it. Does one such song/performance a musical make? I'm not sure.

It was tough limiting 60's westerns to just three, this was the strongest genre of the 60's, imho.

As much as I want to get The Red Shoes in (on the musical theory), I agree with Brook.

Taken literally, many of the films he cites are Melodramas.
