One thing to consider is that a lot of youth/gang culture films are much more about the times when they were made, not youth/gang culture. For instance, Rebel Without A Cause is about fears of emasculation in white 1950s suburbia. It's depiction of gangs is rather comical.

Don't watch The Outsiders, it's a horrible movie. I can't believe it's directed by the same guy who did the first two Godfather movies (I haven't seen the third). It's boring, with annoying, one-dimensional characters, and dull, pointless violence.

Good call on Blood In, Blood Out. I really enjoy the scope of this film. Seeing that title in this thread reminds me of a 'competing' film that was in production around the same time frame; American Me. I prefer Blood In, Blood Out but this film makes for an interesting companion piece.

Two other titles that come to mind are Menace II Society and Mi Vida Loca

"A Clockwork Orange" for some gangs of the future.

"Gangs of New York" for some gangs of the past.

"Deuces Wild" for some gangs of lame straight to video.
