personal favorite is for "free bird", more particularly the 14 minute live version on "one more for the road". another one i love is for "comfortably numb"
but best skill wise imo is "heartbreaker" by led zeppelin 0r "voodoo child" by Jimi Hendrix.

My personal faves, other than the usual war horses (Stairway, Comfortably Numb, etc.):

Slash (Guns n Roses) from November Rain (specifically, the first solo in the 8-minute version).

John Petrucci (Dream Theater) from Home

Brad Gillis (Night Ranger) from Don't Tell Me You Love Me.

I seem to enjoy every guitar solo done by Prince that I've heard. My latest favourite took place in a concert tribute to George Harrison. It was during 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'.

My favourite solo guitar piece: 'William Powell' by Leo Kottke.

This is like voting for favorite band, ice cream flavor, womens hair style...

    But I'll play along.

Beatles - The End (side 2 of Abbey Road)

I have heard that its all Paul, and also that its all three guitar playing Beatles (I don't know the answer), but it also follows the best drum solo known to man on the best album side ever recorded.

I don't know if I agree that it's the best drum solo or best album side, but it's a great album.

    The guitar solo is Paul, George and John, in that order, 3 times (i.e. P, G, J, P, G, J, P, G, J).

Eruption has always done it for me as well...

George Lynch can make my brain twitch though..."Tierra del Fuego" off his solo album... "Mr. Scary"..."In My Dreams"...All are smokin'
Steve Vai..."The Audience Is Listening"..."For the Love of God"
    Satriani..."Crushing Day"..."Always With Me...(Always With You)"
Mellowin' out with Stevie Ray..."Riviera Paradise"

Not that this is particularly brilliant, I just enjoy listening to it.

Dave Grohl's Zeppelin style jam during the live version of 'Have it All'. See the Everywhere But Home DVD.

Stacked Actors Live is also fun.

Again, this isn't groundbreaking stuff, just fun to listen too.

That was intended to be a bit tongue in cheek, Marvin.

I think all these "Name the best" threads are a bit pointless, but I am usually powerless to resist [IMG]

Its all about art, and art can not be ranked, since it is all in the eye or ear of the beholder.

But if you persist, I am going to send Ringo to your house to kick your dog [IMG]

Twin guitar leads like no other band (especially on the alternating solos that they love to do)....Judas Priest, of course.
