Amazon is listing the movie-only disc as being 16:9. Not that Amazon is 100% accurate with their specs, but can anyone who's purchased this confirm or deny?
I have the original DVD release of the film from Universal. It is in 1:1.85 non-animorphic widescreen.

It is my understanding that the "new" single DVD is a repackaging of the original DVD release. Nothing new. No new transfer. NOT anamorphic.

If you buy the complete epic DVD set, you do NOT need the movie. It is a cut-up version of the pilot with the alternate scenes as described. You're not missing much at all.

As for the soundtrack, there is a 1998 recording Varese Sarabande CD of Stu Phillips conducting battlestar Galactica Music with the Scottish National Orchestra. The CD uses the back cover art from the original soundtrack LP on the cover, and art from the cover on the back.

It sounds great though it of course does not include the Space Angels song.

Highly recommended.

You can also if you're lucky find a limited release 4 CD set featuring 95% of all the music from the series from the original session tapes. Cost is $80 but it's worth it. Footlight Records (www.footlight.com) is the best place to find a copy.

Guys thanx for the replies. I have the previous non-anamorphic release and was curious if there was a new transfer on the re-released Epic series tie-in. The specs from amazon can be viewedhere versus the specs for the previous version, here . My question is did anyone buy the re-release? If so, is it the same transfer as before, or did Universal actually give it the 16:9 treatment?

Thanx in advance,

D

Doug, without owning it (as with many others, I already own the old version) I am certain that the answer is "THIS IS NOT ANAMORPHIC 16x9". Why?

1) Universal's re-releases of other items with same specs just in a new box (*batteries not included, The Frighteners, etc.) have just used the same disc, the same master, and there wasn't a bit of difference in the content.

2) Checking Universal's password-protected system full of release details for retailer use shows that they list this item simply as "widescreen". Other entries, like today's release of "The Hulk", are listed instead as "anamorphic widescreen". They obviously are showing a difference between the way they list this one and others that are known to be 16x9 anamorphic.

Bottom line is that the Battlestar Galactica "film" DVD is widescreen letterbox, I'm sure of it. NOT anamorphic at all.

Hello all,

A new poster here who has been enjoying all of the great discussion on this board. With respect to the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA soundtrack discussion, I understand that Geffen/Universal Music Group is set to release a "remastered and remixed" 25th Anniversary CD version of the original 1979 soundtrack album (Stu Phillips conducting the LA Philharmonic) on November 18, 2003.

I have the $80 4cd set and the audio is supposedly made from Stu Phillips "master tapes" and it's kinda staticky and in MONO. I don't know what kinda remastering could be done, but I doubt I'll buy another soundtrack of this music,

I picked up the movie version BEFORE finally deciding to buy the box set (drat!). The movie version is widescreen, but NOT anamorphic. Also, the soundtrack is only Dolby Digital 1.0, but it does include the LFE effects track. My subwoofer was doing a lot of weird noises! :)

The TV pilot has plenty of uncut scenes not included in the movie DVD. Just listen to the commentary track on the TV series DVD for which scenes were added back in along with one scene which was changed from its original theatrical release (not included on either the movie or TV DVD, but shown as part of the deleted scenes on the "Remembering Battlestar Galactica" segment).

One final note. It's funny to see all those old buildings from Montreal's Expo 67 in the two episodes dealing with the Terran people. If anyone's interested, the Presidium used to be the French pavilion, and is now the Montreal Casino. The old US pavilion (the Fuller dome) is now the Biosphere. All the other buildings have been torn down not long after the sequences were shot.

Jeff shows a lot of restraint in his review. As much as he despises the idea of the new mini-series, he mentions it in passing without revealing his opinion on it one way or the other.

I would *never* have shown such retraint about the miniseries. There is nothing I hate more then what's being done to a beloved favorite of mine, particularly when more details are emerging of how close we were to getting a true revival in the form of a continuation with the original cast.

Eric, if you hate the new Galactica just on principal, I must ask this: have you heard about the plans for the revival of The Six Million Dollar Man?

Re:Six Million Dollar Man....I guess the studios haven't seen the debacle that was Wild Wild West?? What a great way to destroy a great tv show.

I might not have used that word, but there's still travesty, abomination, perversion, disgrace, betrayal, usurping, hijacking, defacing etc. etc. etc.
