Was very nice to read Bill Hunt's blurb about Fox planning
to finally roll out Moulin Rouge to Blu-ray in the upcoming
months.
This was sort of unexpected. I talked to Fox about this
title a year ago and was told that Baz would personally
have to work on the release but was tied up with other
projects. Since then, there was a bit of a shakeup at Fox
and I really wasn't able to readily pursue any updates on
its release. I am just hoping that Baz is involved with
the project.
Moulin Rouge was a bit of an eye-opener for me. I
remember when it was released theatrically, I had no
desire to see the film. Didn't seem like the kind of
movie I would be interested in. Wasn't until I was
given a screener copy prior to its DVD release that
I realized what a brilliantly inventive musical this was.
It kind of took the an old concept and made it seem so
brand new with its incorporation of modern pop music
into a musical template. At least, that's the best way
I know to describe it.
Suffice to say, when the DVD came out Home Theater
Forum (with thanks to Peter Staddon) was credited as
voting it DVD OF THE YEAR. I had the opportunity
to meet Baz Luhrmann and tell him how much the film
affected me personally.
Haven't watched the DVD in a long time, mostly for
the reason that the Dolby Digital track is the way to
hear it, and it's defective. In fact, I am not certain it
was ever fixed. There is a synch issue where the
soundtrack is a half second ahead or behind the dialogue.
....which is why I am so pleased to see this being
released in a high resolution format and most assuredly
with fixed audio. Will be looking forward to the official
press release.
