I have my DVD player set to 16:9 and the television picture mode set to "Full." When I play a movie with a 1.85 ratio there are no black bars. Is this an overscan issue or the nature of the viewing mode? Or a result of the upconversion to 540p?

It's an overscan issue. The difference between 1.78:1 and 1.85:1 is about 10 scan lines top and bottom on a 540p display. 5% overscan hides more than this.

1.85:1 films have black bars amounting to 4% of the image area. Since typical RPTV's overscan 5% on top and bottom ... it covers the 2% worth of black bars.

Thanks JG ... my bad math.

Michael,

Just saw you finished a calibration tour in the NW. Any idea when you'll be coming back this way?
