The Willy Wonka debacle and subsequent canceled pre-orders make me wonder what typical sales volumes are for DVDs.
Does anyone know of published stats for # of DVDs sold per year, per title, per studio, per capita, per three-legged dog, or any such thing?
With that, any ballpark estimates for per-DVD costs to studio, distributor, and retailer?
    thanks,
    dave f.

Don't know if any of this satisfies any of your wondering, but I think it's interesting.
According to VideoScan’s First Alert Reporting retailers, DVD title sales for the week ending Aug. 5, 2001 were 1,598,000. Year-to-date title sales are 57,705,000, up 141.2 percent over last year’s sales!
According to the Consumer Electronics Association, DVD player unit sales to dealers for the week ending July 27, 2001 were 350,262, up 18.1 percent from sales during the same week in 2000. Month-to-date sales are 693,013, up 28.9 percent from sales in July 2000 and year-to-date sales are 5,103,806, up 57.6 percent from sales last year.
VCR deck sales for the week were 611,067, down (29) percent from sales during the same week in 2000. Month-to-date sales are 1,103,990, down (33.5) percent from sales in July 2000 and year-to-date sales are 8,317,270, down (29.6) percent when compared with VCR deck sales in 2000.

It'll be really interesting to see how the sales of Willy Wonka pan out (pun intended). I suspect that it will not be quite as successful as the Widescreen Butchers had hoped.
