After lurking through the other thread about what game mags we "trust" as opposed to others, I noticed the majority, like myself, find NextGen to be at or near the top.
Made me start to wonder, how many of you guys have the 1st issue of NextGen (then called Next Generation), with the little sticker on front saying "collectors issue"? I think it has Virtua Fighter 2 on the front as well...?
I myself have it and every other issue since.
Found it sitting at Waldenbooks in the mag rack. Looked cool, "felt" different than any other mag and, after reading if for a few minutes, realized that this magazine is written with the adult gamer in mind. Right up my alley!
Bought it right there, subscribed that day and, have been a reader ever since.

. The interview with Trip Hawkins is a great read.
I wish the current magazine still had those thick almost plastic covers. The current issue has once again gone back to the very flimsy practically page paper, Ziff Davis cheapness cover.

I remember having it at one time... The oldest one I can remember seeing in my place recently was the one with the cover story about PSX's "Destruction Derby".

I have that issue, I believe it has a really good article with Yu in it. He mostly talks about his cars, but good article non the less. It also had a fold out of Sarah Bryant.

Sigh, I miss those heavy covers. Not to mention that they also used to ship in bags, so they didn't get all dinged up in the mail.

The cover totally hooked me in to buying it. A smooth "special" type feel to it

I believe I have that issue.
I think that the magazine was especially excellent in the first year or so, and that the current version pales to the old magazine.
There was another good magazine for a short while called Intelligent Gamer. I used to hang out with the editors on IRC in the original #vidgames on EFNET.

I've got it.
I've also got the first issue of the parent magazine from Britain, "Edge", from October 1993.
I've also got first issues of many British computer mags, landmark ones such as Games Machine and Ace (which none of you will have ever heard of I'm sure!) all the way back to Computer and Video Games; issue 1, November 1981. I was 9 years old

Edit: Here's what that magazine looks like: http://website.lineone.net/~simon.st...1/november.htm

I had it. I remember picking it up at a grocery store and subscribing as soon as I got home. It was unlike any gaming magazine in the US at that time. EGM, GamePro, & Gamefan were so juvenile and lacked any sense of professionalism.
How many of you had your name printed in the NextGen subscription ad? That was super-cool.

I don't have it, but I have a big stack of old issues lying around. What a great mag, but it was so much better a few years ago. It was such a professional mag, with real gaming articles that were actually about something, like the stories behind some of the worst, most ill-concieved games in history, along with actual testimony from developers. The original hardcore article is probably my favorite. Next Gen still the best gaming mag out there, but it's a shadow of its former self.

I know them all well - I grew up reading them too. I've got a couple of early CVGs back from my ZX-81 days :)
Genuinely the *first* computer or video game magazine in the world - ignore what any US based magazine tells you :)
