Dang, I really wanted The Frighteners, which I've never seen. Sounds like I won't be getting it. Oh well -- I'm sure I'll be able to find it online cheaply enough. :)

For those unfamiliar with Streets of Fire, it's a semi-musical action flick very loosely based on the Iliad (Walter Hill, the director, made The Warriors around the same time, loosely based on the Odyssey). It features a very young (but old enough ;) ) Diane Lane and a couple of original Jim Steinman songs (among others). It's been a while since I've seen it because I've been awaiting a decent home video edition (the DVD was not anamorphic), but I remember it being a lot of fun.

You're probably right. Oh well--it was free, so maybe I'll just keep it (I am a fan of Diane Lane ;) ).

I am serious about trading Flags For Our Fathers, as that is a duplicate for me. Perhaps I'll post in the "for sale" forum but I thought I'd mention it here.

I guess the Canadian ones had fewer demands. Or you got lucky. I've decided to keep them all (just haven't decided if I'll get the other four Harry Potters in HD DVD or wait to get them in "blu" later on.

That's my suspicion, Paul. My experience has been that Canadians tend to be methodical in adopting new technology, and as an example I cite Laserdisc, which didn't appear in some parts of the country until the early 90s. Speedier adoption would have increased Pioneer's likelihood to expand distribution outside of major urban centres (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver).

In 1991 I was living in Sarnia, Ont. and an a local independent A/V store (Denon was the entry level brand, so it was not an inexpensive place to shop) carried a wide selection of laserdiscs--well out of my budget at the time. I was surprised to see them, though, as I'd only seen them in Toronto and Montreal.

As for Canadians and their slow adoption of new a/v technology--it's the prices. Even with the current exchange rate, announced MSRPs for discs and players in "blu" are still outrageously more than their US counterparts.

I'll give Sony credit for that. But most of their other gear is a lot more than the exchange rate (and I own a lot of Sony gear--not bashing their products, just their prices).

Mailed my 5 HD DVD offer 1st week of January, got 5 in the mail today.
Only 2 I had picked, and 3 that weren't even on the list.
Got that I picked: Aeon Flux, Swordfish
3 I didn't pick: Bulletproof (gag), Doom and Serenity.
I probably would have picked Serenity given the chance, so I guess it ain't all bad.
But Bulletproof??? Seriously? Why was this even mastered for HD?

Kinda bummed I didn't get Pitch Black or The Frighteners.

I received my 5 free HD-DVDs today after sending away the first week of February for them. I requested Aeon Flux, Pitch Black, Swordfish, The Frighteners, and Darkman. What I received was Aeon Flux, Swordfish, Jarhead, Bulletproof, and Dante's Peak. I really wish I would have received Pitch Black but I guess I really can't complain. I'm just glad that I received 5 free movies to add to my small collection.

Also received my shipment:

The Italian Job => The Italian Job
The Thing => Casino
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory => Harry Potter 5 (already have it)
The Frighteners => Chronicles of Riddick (already have it, slight different cover art, though)
Troy => Troy

So, 3 out of 5, and 2 dups. It could have been worse.

I am really regretting not sending in that form much earlier. :frowning:

I sent it in towards the end of February, so I expect I'll get the Mystery Package in a few weeks.

I called, and they said my stuff shipped on May 23rd. I forgot to ask if they knew what was included, and don't want to call back 'cause I had to wait on hold. The tension mounts. . .

Naturally, the discs showed up today. Weird selection.
  • Aeon Flux -- I actually requested this one, but only because it was the least unappealing of its group. I hear it's a nice A/V demo, at least.
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix -- I only know that this isn't the first or second Potter flick, which should indicate my level of interest in it.
  • Casino -- I *think* I have this on DVD, but what the heck. It's a good movie, so I'm cool with it.
  • Billy Madison -- I like some Adam Sandler movies a lot. This ain't one of 'em. Meh.
  • Sleepy Hollow -- Pretty sure I have this on DVD. It's a good movie though. Maybe it's got some extra feature that's not on the DVD, but I doubt it. I'm not as keen on rewatching it as Casino, though.

I think the other ones that I ordered were The Thing, The Frighteners, um. . .um. . .Black Rain (dissed on that one in the BD *and* HD offers), and. . .lessee. . .I think it might've been Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Wish I'd sent the form in sooner.

Guess I'll order a copy of Streets of Fire while they're dirt cheap.

I received my five free HD DVD's today. I got 3 three titles I requested: The Italian Job, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Black Rain. All 3 cases were in pristine condition. The other 2 were Miami Vice and Billy Madison. The bar code on Vice had a minor gash while the Madison bar code had a good gash. I did not get The Thing or The Frighteners. I would rather have Vice than Frighteners. The Thing would have been great to get but after reading this thread I already had written it off. Overall I am happy, I got only one movie I had no interest in.

When did you send in the form? I'm happy for you, but irritated for myself that you got those discs we both requested and I didn't. (Miami Vice is a very good movie, but the SD-DVD is fine for me.)

On the plus side, I can order them for under $10 from DDDVD now. :)
