Dave H,

They're the stereotypical mob characters.

De Niro wants to live the illusion that the's an honest businessman, Pesci is a greedy sick thug, and Stone is a screwed-up hustler. Scorsese then needs three hours to tell us this, as well as money and power corrupt.

Seth,

I don't think the characters were anymore shallow than in Goodfellas. In fact, Stone and Deniro's relationship was more focused and complex than anyone's relationship in Goodfellas. The three hours to tell us this was sure good. I think Casino and Goodfellas are more similar than different.

Dave H,

I felt that there was much more of an examination of friendship within the mafia in Goodfellas. In Casino, it was simply that money comes first and foremost.

I own the R2 Special Edition, with the extra disc and "documentary", as well as a selection of Jake LaMotta jokes.

I really hope they produce a better documentary for the R1 release, couse the one on this is nothing but talking heads, and only a few of them were involved with the film itself.

Seth,

I agree there was more of an examination of the frendship in the mafia with Goodfellas. But, I liked the "love" relationship which was examined more closely with Deniro, Stone, Pechi, and Wood. I disagree that money was all that came first for Deniro; I would say this was true for Stone and Peshci though.

Raging Bull is currently OOP. MGM/UA is rumored to be working on a special edition, but the title was not listed on their unofficial list of 2003 releases that circulated on the board recently. This means we probably won't see it until 2004. This thread also discusses the rumored Raging Bull SE, but offers little but speculation.

The special edition is out on Region 2, but it's non-anamorphic unfortunately. So I'm waiting for it the same as you guys. Boy I haven't seen the movie for ages but I'm holding out.

That would be a shame if the Region 1 SE is also non-anamorphic. I can forgive the first edition but I couldn't forgive if it happens again, unless it was director specific...but since Marty is a videophile himself, I can't imagine that being the case.

I found a brand new oop copy off of Ebay for $20 it will hold me over until the SE comes out...its non-anamorphic I think but other than that the pq is pretty good. Its a great film, I've watched it something like 13 times in the last 3 weeks because I'm studying it for my college film class. I'm not even tired of it or anything.

On Netflicks it shows that Raging Bull is out of print. It then took my selection and put in a que called DVD'S waiting for release.

Has anyone heard any info about a re-release of Ranging Bull?

An SE was discussed a couple of years ago, but nothing official. I find it odd. But, I would have to guess a SE is coming relatively soon.

There were two Criterion laserdiscs of this film, a 2-disc and a supplement-laden (and highly desireable) 3-disc, CAV version.

The rights to this film belong to MGM/UA, which does not have a working relationship with Criterion for DVD licensing. So any SE will have to come from the Lion.

I know a SE of this has been rumored for years now and was wondering if there was any new information. I saw a new copy of the current(now OOP)MGM disc for $19.99 yesterday and was very tempted to pick it up. Thoughts?

This was rumored to be released a couple of years ago. Haven't heard a word about it since.

The thing to rememember, is that the Warner Scorsese SEs haven't arrived yet and we won't be seeing a SE of Raging Bull until after those at least, if we see a SE at all. It certainly deserves a SE but I doubt that Criterion would license their commentary or if Scorsese would record a new one.
