In my last post, I said "no big deal" The reason I think so is because Rhino is releasing episodes that are pretty easy to come by for collectors. The last set was nothing but episodes that have been on terminal re-run on Sci Fi. I just wish they would get some episodes that have more collector appeal.

Its great that they are releasing MST3K eps, Its just that the episodes they have been releasing are not "rare."

Well, some of the highly aired episodes are also fan favorites.

Sci-Fi was airing Jack Frost a lot for a while, but it's one of the best episodes from season 8. On the other hand, they aired lesser episodes into the ground...

I can't even watch Hamlet. Too few riffs, and yeesh... what a movie. Who decided to do a badly dubbed low-budget German Hamlet? Worst MST3K ever.

Agreed, and Im glad they are releasing them. I will be picking this set up of course, but I just wish we could get some older episodes that have been never been unavailable. It seems like that may never happen, though.

Once Rhino finishes releasing the episodes that Sci Fi had rights to, we may see the end of MST3K on commercial DVD.

Re-Runs on SCI FI end JAN 31, so MST3K will soon be gone, probably forever.

The episodes they are currently releasing are not tied up in rights hell. Here is a list of the sci fi channel episodes, and what their current satus is. Episodes that have not aired in in the past year are unlikely to make it to DVD, unless Rhino coughs up some $$$. Even then, its possible the original rights holders dont want their products ever released with the MST3K treatment.

I'm glad to have Girl in Gold Boots, Space Mutiny and Overdrawn on DVD, great movies.

Hamlet, I'll agree having seen it for the first time, is quite bad.

Hobgoblins, I think has a pretty good chance of arriving on DVD, since the director himself gave MST3K his own movie to riff on.

and MERLIN'S MYSTICAL SHOP OF WONDERS has a slim chance of arriving on DVD, since MST3K had a hard time airing it on SCI-FI Channel the first time around.(it was the one episode that was played out of sequence)

I just wish that some episodes that are currently on DVD, would make it to MST3K DVD

What has been cleared to air on television hasn't necessarily been cleared to be released on home video, and what the Sci-Fi Channel decides to shell out for licensing doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what Rhino decides to spend.

Adam, you're right. My point is: I think the fact that Rhino is releasing the same episodes that Sci Fi has been re-running over and over is a good indication that the rights for those particular movies are easier to clear. Rhino probably can get the rights for episodes that have not been shown recently, but it would probably come at a higher dollar amount.

So far, Rhino has released only episodes that have little or no rights clearance issues. They have not released a new episode from season 1-7 to video in many years.

My suspicion is they will release these episodes to DVD, and that will be it. I hope they prove me wrong!

Giant Spider Invasion
Parts: The Clonus Horror
Invasion of The Neptune Men
Space Mutiny
Time Chasers
Overdrawn At The Memory Bank
Phantom Planet
Hobgoblins
The Touch of Satan
Final Sacrifice
Devil Fish
Screaming Skull
Quest Of The Delta Knights
Soultaker
Girl In Gold Boots
Merlin's Mystical Shop Of Wonders
Future War
Boggy Creek II
Track of The Moon Beast
Hamlet
It Lives By Night
Horrors Of Spider Island
Squirm

I am one of those freaks who has every single one of the Joel episodes (including KTMA) on SVHS :) I have been trying to convert to DVD while I can. God bless it, some of my favorite episodes are now in crappy quality, even for SVHS.. I so wish I had DVDs of some that will never happen, apparently :frowning: (all of the Gameras, many of the older eps)

Dane,

Please report back. As far as I can recall, I have ordered VHS copies from this guy in the past and they've come out decently.

Entire season sets of unreleased episodes? Wow. I've got everything on video (alas, not SVHS), but an upgrade to DVDR would be sweet.

My favorite short of all time is Mr. B. Natural, but alas it aired with WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST which, I believe, Rhino doesn't have the rights to.

As has been said, I think THE TOUCH OF SATAN and BOGGY CREEK II will make it into the forthcoming MST3K DVD set, as Best Brains has been offering them legitimately on tape for some time now, as they have with HAMLET and THE GIRL IN GOLD BOOTS, which made it into the last DVD set.

As for the other Sci-Fi era episodes, things look rather bleak, in my guestimation--

Universal controls:

REVENGE OF THE CREATURE
THE LEECH WOMAN
THE MOLE PEOPLE
THE DEADLY MANTIS
THE THING THAT COULDN'T DIE
RIDING WITH DEATH
AGENT FOR H.A.R.M.
THE PROJECTED MAN

--Highly unlikely these episodes will ever see legit release.

Paramount controls:

THE DEADLY BEES
SPACE CHILDREN
DIABOLIK

--Highly unlikely these episodes will ever see legit release.

The Sam Arkoff and/or James Nicholson estates control:

THE UNDEAD
TERROR FROM THE YEAR 5000
THE SHE CREATURE
I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF

--Highly unlikely that these episodes will ever see legit release.

Director Ray Dennis Steckler controls (I think) his own film:

THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE CREATURES WHO STOPPED LIVING AND BECAME MIXED-UP ZOMBIES

--Legit release possible, I guess, but I have the feeling this would be fairly unlikely.

Foreign independent productions:

JACK FROST
PRINCE OF SPACE
INVASION OF THE NEPTUNE MEN
DEVIL FISH
THE PUMA MAN
HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND
GORGO

--Some/all may be tied-up in home video rights hell, or the current owners may be asking too high a fee for DVD release (as has happened with non-MSTK foreign genre films on DVD, such the Mexican horror films that Image/Something Weird were prepping for DVD awhile back, only to be legally hamstrung, or the long-delayed widescreen DVD of KILL BABY KILL Image was going to release years ago), or are unhappy at being ridiculed (ala Sandy Frank). Then again, some of these may truly be public domain in the USA, so perhaps, say, PRINCE OF SPACE might make it into a MST3K SET, while something like JACK FROST might not.

North American films produced independently:

GIANT SPIDER INVASION
PARTS: THE CLONUS HORROR
HORROR OF PARTY BEACH
DEVIL DOLL
TIME CHASERS
WEREWOLF
HOBGOBLINS
THE FINAL SACRIFICE
QUEST OF THE DELTA KNIGHTS
SOULTAKER
MERLIN'S MYSTICAL SHOP OF WONDERS
FUTURE WAR
BLOOD WATERS OF DR. Z
TRACK OF THE MOON BEAST
FINAL JUSTICE
IT LIVES BY NIGHT
SQUIRM (MGM released this film on DVD, but this may also be public domain now...similar to MGM's DVDs of HE WALKED BY NIGHT and I BURY THE LIVING)

--The prospects for these are anybody's guess. Perhaps we'll see all/some/none of them from Rhino in the future. I think at least a few will squeeze through, though.

Films likely in the public domain:

THE PHANTOM PLANET
SCREAMING SKULL

--These probably have the best chance of being included in further legit DVD editions, if Rhino decides to continue the series.

Not that I have any inside sources, mind you... Again, just educated guesses on my part.

Oops, my bad on PROJECTED MAN. Thanks for the correction, Patrick.

However, are you sure it's public domain now? If it is, I'm surprised there aren't a flood of cheap R1 DVD copies of it from Alpha, Brentwood, Diamond, VCI, etc.

That aired ONCE. Once!

I know, because I screwed up taping it the first time and kept waiting for the rerun. And waiting....

per the Mystery Science Theater 3000 info site:

"We have more information about Volume 5 of Rhino Home Video’s "Mystery
Science Theater 3000 Collection" series. The release date is March 9th.
It will
feature episodes 821- TIME CHASERS, 908- THE TOUCH OF SATAN, 1003-
MERLIN'S SHOP
OF MYSTICAL WONDERS and 1006- BOGGY CREEK II.

Special features on the set will include introductions by Mike Nelson
(similar to those in last set, but Mike tells us they will be somewhat
longer),
full-length interviews with Mike & Kevin Murphy, and the original
trailer for "The
Touch Of Satan."

Before you ask: Based on our conversations with our source at Rhino we
don’t
think the contents of this list should be read as an indication that
it’s only
Sci-Fi Channel episodes from this point on. As soon as we know more about what’s next from Rhino, you’ll know too."

A MUCH better set of shows than last time, in my opinion.
