I read about a year ago that King Kong was about to get the same treatment as Citizen Kane. I beleive it is Warner Bros who owns the rights and they said that it would be released within that year (which I beleive was 2002) and also would be the final and optimal release.

And since this film is not yet released and that 2003 marks the 70th anniversary for it, I'd find it ignorant and silly not to take the oppurtunity to put it out this year. So, did anyone hear anything?

I seem to recall reading that WB had planned a release for King Kong this year, but that restoration and other prep work was taking longer than expected, quite possibly long enough to push it into 2004.

For what it's worth, I saw a new 35mm print a few weeks ago, and it looked very, very nice indeed.

This was discussed extensively a couple of months ago. Basically, don't expect the King Kong SE this year. IIRC, the restoration work is taking longer than Warner initially envisioned. It's nothing to get discouraged about at all - although they'll miss the anniversary, they ARE working on it and they ARE taking the time to do it right.

According to news in the "Movies" forum, they may hold it back until the new "Peter Jackson's King Kong" hits theaters in 2005.

Say do you think they will include the original ending that was aired on SNL a few weeks ago? [IMG]

    Jason Seaver,
Where/why the "new" 35mm print of Kong?

It played at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge last weekend for a couple of days. I don't know how "new" the print was - it was advertised as a "New 35mm Print!", though not a restored one.

As to why, well, do you really need a reason? [IMG] It's the 70th anniversery and the guys at the Brattle managed to book a print. They're a great repatory theater, and part of their theme for March/April is "overlooked by Oscar".
