I caught Night of the Juggler late night on Cinemax sometime last year. It came out in 1980 and starred James Brolin. The thing I remember most about it was the brutal and relentless opening chase sequence. It seemed to go on forever and was really down and dirty. Its also fascinating because some of the movie takes place in New York's seedy "old 42nd street" before it was turned into Disneyland. Brolin goes on a rampage this film.

It seems there is hardly any info on this film anywhere.

The movie was released to theatres by Columbia Pictures, but they do not have the rights to it; it was a negative pickup from producers Jay Weston and Arnold Kopelson. Initial TV broadcasts were syndicated by Viacom, so maybe Paramount still controls those airings.

There were VHS tape releases from Nostalgia Merchant and later Media Home Entertainment, both long out of print.

Sounds like it's ripe for an enterprising indie to pick up, provided they meet the producer's price. Which is probably why we haven't seen it materialize on DVD yet, unfortunately.

Thanks, Mark! I guess I'll go looking for a used VHS copy.

This is one of my favorite films. One of the unknown great action films of all time. I think it might come out at some point by Anchor Bay or one of those type companies.

    Wow. Blast from the past!

    I LOVE that film.
There was a line from some street guy that went,

    "foo foony dee foo foo...!"

I do remember seeing a still of the movie in Famous Monsters or People (can't remember which) of Brolin chatting with naked real-life porn star Sharon Mitchell in one of those old 42nd Street "stripper booths." The photo was a bit of an eye-opener to my 10-year-old eyes!

NIGHT OF THE JUGGLER is a first-rate suspense thriller with a compelling performance by James Brolin. Critics were enthusiastic, but it didn't get much promotion or much of a release, as I recall, and audiences had trouble finding it. Everyone who saw it has never been able to forget it. Like REPORT TO THE COMMISSIONER, the film shows a New York City that no longer exists and it captures ambiance of the city that's more interesting today than in 1980. A fine film in every way that could really catch on with consumers if given a chance on DVD.

I would buy it in a New York minute.
