Airport metal detector affects camcorder? (1 Viewer)

I just got back from Hawaii to discover my old Sony 8mm handycam isn't working so well. I check my tapes on a friends and the tapes are fine, but when I play them on mine, there is a good deal of noise in the picture sort of like you get when you hold down the ff or rewind buttons while watching the tape. Its not unwatchable, but somethings very wrong.
I had it as my carry on, so it went thru metal detectors about 15 times. Could this have affected it? What can I do?

No it should not have affected your 8mm camcorder in any way.

The first thing I would check is the recording/playback heads for dirt.

Maybe something got knocked out of alignment. Was the camcorder dropped or jarred? The metal detector/X-ray shouldn't have affected it.
