A good question, but something tells me that many of those dropped films are better than this new list of 44 films.

Sounds like a pretty crappy idea to me.

I was just thinking last week, that they should do a show that focuses on the smaller genres and do a maybe a series of 10 top 10s.
Musicals
Westerns
Sci-Fi
Film Noir
Bio Pics
Epics
Animated
Silent
etc...etc...

The first 100 was an interesting idea, but to rehash with 90s/00s films added is fairly pointless. I thought the purpose of such lists was to enlighten people who aren't familiar with classic films. These people already know about Gladiator & Saving Private Ryan and to add these to a list of all-time great films won't make them curious to explore other films (at least in my opinion).

I've watched most of the AFI countdowns, but unless I'm extremely bored that night (highly unlikely), I won't be watching.

And, how many of the original selection been dropped in favor of other older films?
Example: Ace in the Hole is now on the list, but it wasn't in the 1998 list.

Wow...
Okay, I've been comparing the list, and just looking at the first two letters of the alphabet, a lot has changed:

Gone:
Americanization of Emily
Anatomy of a Murder
Around the World in 80 Days
Babes in Arms
Barefoot in the Park
Bataan
Batman
Beverly Hills Cop
Boys Town
The Broadway Melody
Bullitt

New:
Ace in the Hole
Airplane!
American Beauty
As Good As It Gets
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
The Aviator
A Beautiful Mind
Being John Malkovich
Boogie Nights
Boyz N The Hood
The Breakfast Club
Brokeback Mountain
Bull Durham

I'll keep on comparin'

That's one good thing at least.

If they add "Ace in the Hole", I'm on board! :)

Maybe that would finally get Paramount to pull their head out of their ass.

Updated the list. I think I missed one of the films that are gone. Again, let me know if I messed something up.

As much as I like Ace in the Hole/The Big Carnival, it's not as good of a film as Anatomy of a Murder which was dropped from the list.

LA Confidential is the best of the eligible titles – take Out of Africa off the original list and replace it with The Color Purple – justice served.

I haven't figured that out :S
The "NEW" list has one more than the "GONE" list (80 vs. 79).
So I either missed one of the Gone films or incorrectly included one of the New ones.

While I disagree with this, the removal of "Anatomy of a Murder" is one of my only objections to the list modifications so far (One of my personal faves). That and the removal of "Only Angels Have Wings". Other than that, I think they've done a pretty fair job of cutting the fat and replacing with lean.

Wow, I've got to say I'm rather appalled. There isn't one film on the "gone" list that I would trade away for crap like "There's Something About Mary".

And the prejudice against comedy continues. Not that I especially like There's Something About Mary, but taking a quick glance at the old films, both Boys Town and Broadway Melody are worse.

I note with great pleasure that both A Christmas Story and Stand By Me are being considered in the new list.

My guess is that they took the 80 or so titles that recieved the fewest votes in the first 100 movies and decided to drop those. That would explain why some high profile films like Anatomy of a Murder are no longer being considered. But it's good to see obscure silents (Richard III) and Shirely Temple (Little Colonel) replaced by films more likely to be voted for.

well I was going by your comment and the many other comments above it that basically howled about only the comedies, like Austin Powers and Something About Mary. I think both made the AFI laughs list.

I think I'd be more interested in this if I had a vote.

As to the changes, 22 that are being dropped are wonderful films (e.g., Hail the Conquering Hero), while I think that highly of only 21 on the new list (e.g., Young Frankenstein). For the most part it's just trading a good film for a different good film and a bad film for a different bad film. You get rid of the worst Best Oscar pic in the first half of Academy Awards history (Cimarron) and replace it with the worst Best Oscar pic in the second half (Titanic)? Jeez. :)

Anatomy of Murder being taken off just makes little sense to me. Then again I love the film, and it would be on my list.
