Adding a separate amp to a receiver does not guarantee audible improvement. I had a chance to audition 3 different receivers in my system. I ended up buying a Nakamichi receiver because the sound was the most natural of the 3. There were differences but I would not say they had anything to do with power output. You are more likely to ruin your ears before you drive a 100 watt per channel amp into hard clipping. There are so many varibles: room size; speaker efficiency; listening levels; sub woofing capability; ability of the receiver to deliver anywhere near rated output with all channels driven simultaneously.
If you want to make a dramatic difference in your sound buy new speakers. After the room, the speakers have by far the most influence on your sound. The electronics are not even in the same ballpark as your speakers.
