8 AWG marine power cable used as speaker cable? (1 Viewer)

i was talking to a guy and he is using 8 AWG, 600V, tinned copper low resistance power wire as speaker cable. is this recommended, any drawbacks or disadvantages to be using this other than the heavy gauge. would it fit a normal banana plug?

he says he has been using it for years and has had no problems as far as signal interference or signal loss.

I can't see why there would be any problem with it. Few a/v applications require that kind of cable, but this hobby is all about overkill, so I say go for it.

If you've got binding posts, use spade lugs instead of banana plugs for such a large gage of wire.

Or, simply cut some wire off until it fits the bananas and/or spades.

where would i get large spade lugs? couldn't find them on monoprice.com or bluejeanscable.com

You can always do a search for "8 gauge" + spade and that'll turn up a bunch of sources. For example at http://shopper.cnet.com/Metra_Tsunam...-32118911.html you'll find a 5 pack of gold plated ones for $8. Otherwise, give a call to some local car stereo installation places and tell them what you're looking for.
