That is a nice opening for Prometheus all around.
My first thought though was;
This bodes well for an R-rated Die Hard 5. Now its only hurdles will be the rest of the movie.

Yeah, I'm hoping that Prometheus does well enough that Hollywood will make some more big budget movies for adults rather than making everything PG-13.

Does anyone know what kind of business Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter was expected to do? It took in $16.3 million over the weekend.

Copying and pasting from Box Office Mojo:
Distributor 20th Century Fox is expecting between $15 and $16 million this weekend.

They hit their mark but the movie cost $69 million (as per Box Office Mojo again) without all the marketing costs, etc. so I'm guessing they'll be losing money on it.

Step Up Revolution and The Watch opened very weakly. Ted will crack $200M, which is a hell of a figure for it.

What were the expectations for it this weekend? For a movie that is in its second weekend and tainted by the actions of some maniac, $55 million doesn't seem that bad to me (especially when the combined total of the other 9 movies in the top 10 is $57 million).

Travis:
The Dark Knight took a -53% drop. Avengers had a -50% drop. Hunger Games had a 58% drop.
The general rule on a HUGE hit is that a drop of less then 60% is OK, 66% drop is not so good, but any drop over 66% is considered huge. The closer you are to a 50% drop, the better.. but it's a real rarity that happens (that's why people went nuts when Avengers did that)

But 76% is not good. With this kind of drop, the debate over where it will fall in the years grosses is pretty well determined, it will have almost no chance to catch "Hunger Games" ($406M domestic) or Avengers ($615M)

Thanks for the info. Obviously, the shooting is a big reason why it's lagging behind. Not that everyone is scared to go to theaters but that horrible event has taken away alot of enthusiasm that people had for the movie.
More of a comment or a rhetorical question but did anyone seriously think that lightning would be caught in a bottle two times and The Dark Knight Rises would make more than The Dark Knight and also overtake The Avengers?

People are saying the shooting is the reason but perhaps the fact that there wasn't a major Hollywood death of a star BEFORE the film is what makes the numbers look less impressive. The Ledger death for TDK was major publicity because people wanted to see his "last" (which it wasn't) performance or the "maniac performance" that drove him over the edge. I'm sure the shooting is keeping people away from the movie but those "outsiders" who weren't interested in the series went to TDK because of the death. Those same outsiders might just not feel comfortable going to this one for the shooting or perhaps they're just not interested or perhaps they're tired of superhero movies this summer.

That's the biggest reason why I thought it would be impossible for The Dark Knight Rises to ever come close to the numbers that The Dark Knight pulled in.

I've personally heard several people say they weren't going (or weren't going anytime soon) because of the Colorado theater massacre.
I don't agree with letting fear of a repeat of an isolated event keep you from living your life as you planned, but surely there are a number of people who are just too unsettled by what happened to go see the movie.
Just how much in box office dollars that amounts to, who can say for sure? But wasn't the estimate for the opening weekend predicted to be about $190M before this happened? So a reasonable guess would be the tragedy resulted in about a 15% hit for opening weekend.

Maybe it is just not good enough to warrant repeat views for the majority of the audience. Most movies make a lot of their money on repeat business from fans or people who were impressed by the film enough to want to see it again.

The feedback I've seen has been pretty positive (even on the hate tank known as the internet) and it's only been out for 8 days so I don't think repeat business- outside of major fans- is really that big of a factor yet. For the record, I didn't really like Batman Begins or The Dark Knight so I'm not some hardcore fan bent on inventing any excuse on why 'my' movie isn't doing as well as expected. I'm just pointing out the obvious reason why it's taken a dip.
