Also, even if CSI and Tonight Show were shot with the same cameras, they would look totally different. The lighting you do for a talk show is almost 180 from what you do for drama. And lighting is a big part of that "pro look"

Forget The Tonight Show, have any of you ever watched the (shot on HD) Max Bickford, or Diagnosis Murder?
The shot-on-film CSI makes them look like crap. Hell, Becker makes them look like crap. Just about anything on CBS primetime (all shot on film) does!
Here's a quote from an industry insider:
"I only know of one show that is being shot on HD video with the support and enthusiasm of the director of photography, and that's "Pasadena." All the others are on HD video for financial reasons, and under those circumstances, the intent is to make as "film-like" an image as possible."

I personally think that in the next 3-4 years we will see increasing acceptance of digital movie projection, thanks to these technological improvements:
1) Better sensors for digital movie cameras. The new Foveon digital sensor allows for much higher density sensors, and 12+ megapixel sensors could be within reach using the Foveon design. That will definitely mean much sharper digital recording, and that may lead to much sharper digital projection, too.
2) Better digital projectors. We'll probably see technological improvements that will drastically cut the cost of a digital projector.
3) Better media storage. The new blue-spectrum laser technology could be applied to an optical disc as large as 300 mm in size, which could mean around two terabytes of data storage on a single two-sided 300 mm disc. That means a digital movie could be stored in uncompressed form on a single disc, which means instead of a large bank of hard drives to store the data for the movie all you need is a much smaller optical drive.
