I have Fox’s Italian release of CtB Blu-ray, which is uncut and with all the corrected music cues. It was said at the time this was the only correct release. Sounds great.
War And Peace (Bondarchuk)
Waterloo by the same director
Zulu
Khartoum
Spartacus
Helen Of Troy
I’m sure others will come to mind.
In my youth I remember being quite impressed with some of the action in the Steve Reeves peplum ‘ The Trojan Horse’ but haven’t seen this for many decades .
I originally saw TGSET during it‘s UK premiere run at the London Casino Cinerama. An excellent presentation with superb image and sound. Whilst not the most commercial of the ‘60s Roadshow Epics, it does deserve to be restored to it’s former glory.
The sniper sequence was filmed at the old disused gas works at Beckton, East London. Suitable vegetataion and trees etc were imported and planted to give the Vietnam effect. I believe the training sequences were filmed in Cambridgeshire (but stand to be corrected).
Mr Kubrick didn't like flying.
I don't think there would be too many dissenting voices if Duncan was persuaded to run the three panel HTWWW again this year. It's been many years since a film presentation has got to me like last year's showing. A brilliant original print and a superb presentation.
I remember seeing this at the London Casino Cinerama, showing just prior to The Hallelujah Trail or Khartoum (I can't remember which). The continuous tracking shot of the pipeline was highly effective on the giant curved screen.
BBC2 HD showed this last Saturday, approx 150 mins. It looked pretty good to me. As an aside, they also recently broadcast 'The Night Of The Generals' in HD as well. Both are now on my hard drive.
Apparently this will enable the IMAX to run full programmes throughout the year, as most IMAX is now digital. The cinemas at The Museum must function as profitable concerns or they will finish, along with Festivals and, of course, WSW.
I think that Picturehouse will only be running the programming, and that the Museum retain ownership of Pictureville, Cubby Broccolli and the Imax. No refurbishment plans are mooted, therefore let's hope that the wonderful Pictureville remains as is. See you at WSW 2015 !
Seconded. I saw it on it's premiere run at the London Casino in single projection Cinerama. It was a magnificent spectacle in this format. The film itself was rather turgid, though.
It was indeed an excellent weekend.
Everything looked good from the middle of the fifth row as well.
The presentation of West Side Story (following Robert Wise' instructions regarding lighting and curtains ) was sublime.
A big 'thank you' to the Pictureville projection team and Duncan...
"Once Upon A Time In Italy " by Sir Christopher Frayling covers the Dollars Trilogy as well as OUATITW and Duck You Sucker. It's a great read and contains some wonderful interviews, photos and poster art.
I first saw 'Khartoum' at the Casino Cinerama on it's premiere run.
Gordon's head has never been seen on the pole. The shot tracks up and finishes before it reaches the top, cutting, if my ancient memory serves me well, to the reaction shot of The Mahdi.
