Dang what a mixed bag. I think I will just have to open the UHD and see it on the big screen. This one is a nice improvement:

My copy arrived this morning, and I had decided to leave it unopened for return until seeing caps-a-holic comparisons. After watching the first half of the old blu-ray this morning I see the caps are up. I guess I will open the UHD :-)
I have the UHD TGTBATU which is awesome and was highly needed. Today I watched A Fistful of Dollars from the Man With No Name Trilogy BD from 2010 to review its awesomeness or lack of. It looked really good. I'm on the fence on $40 for the first two movies. Maaybe I'll wait for a lower price to...
Their product page consistently refers to "any wall", and never discusses what should be the characteristics of the wall or how various other textures or colors affect the display. That seems a bit suspicious...
I have some DVD (ripped to a Plex server) which look great- upsampled by the BD player and projected to 120" with the 5050UB. But most are far out-classed by their BD counterparts. You sound hostile to the BD format, and of course, there are movies on BD not released on DVD. cheers
Love this movie (helps I grew up 100 miles from Tulsa, 60s and 70s).
I agree the surround mix is way over the top, detracting from the movie. Why oh why Mr Coppola?
Edit: I guess next time around, I'll put the receiver in stereo mode and see if that fixes it...
I normally fawn over natural grain and eschew DNR (and I absolutely can't stand sharpening to the point of haloing), but I know when I watched this UHD a couple years ago, I liked it and didn't mind the lack of grain, since the detail is quite good and sharp, and thinking that as a science...
Anticipating the UHD, I watched the Digibook BD copy (17Mb VC-1) and it looked very nice projected at 120".
But I decided to keep the UHD preorder, even on my new retirement budget, and can't wait to watch it.
I have all my DVD (233) and BD (2049) captured on Blu-ray.com, and their free app on my iPhone. It's perfect. In addition, all my CD (1226), DVD, and a few BD are ripped to disc. I use Plex for all those digital assets, with the Plex app for desktop, iPhone, and on the Roku attached to my HT...
I just watched the Restoration bonus on the Baraka disc. I believe what you are saying is that there is no 8K scan data from which to build a new 4K UHD? What a shame- and how short- sighted. Then I guess we won't be waiting on one....
The argument over should the 1080 disc be included or not is pointless. (Especially on every other 4K release thread- it's been talked to death.) There's no single playbook the studios use to resolve the combinations of UHD vs new/ old 1080p. But in this case, there is a new 1080p disc, that...
