My receiver, an old Sony, does not have HDMI input. I run the audio from my cable box into the receiver and then to external peaker system. When I watch TV, DVR, etc, I select the Cable box input and I have sound. When I run Netflix I get no sound, mainly because it doesn't go through the cable...
