The DVD Biz Has Circled the Drain for Years. In 2024, It Goes Down the Tubes
[Excerpts]
DEG did not publish the exact split of Physical Product between sales and rentals, but rough estimates can be calculated based on the existing information. DVD rentals in 2022 were $502.35 million, so...
Has anyone else had audio/video sync issues lately with Criterion Channel streaming?
I had to stop watching The Naked Spur a few weeks ago because there was about a half second delay, which seemed to get worse as the film progressed.
Also had issues on The Daytrippers.
I sent a message to...
Yes, I have Spectrum. But for me, this is a very recent problem, as I've been watching Watch TCM via Spectrum since it first became available on Roku in December 2018, and I've only had skipping issues in the last 6 weeks.
I've seen no issues with picture quality on Watch TCM, as many of the...
I just watched the film (Romance on the High Seas) from 30 minutes in to 1:15 in. No more skips.
Either there was something related to peak demand time affecting the stream when this film (and the others) were skipping (I usually watch films from 10 PM on), or they fixed the issue.
I noticed...
No, it's nothing like that.
I'm seeing jump cuts that skip about 5 seconds of the film each time. Hardly ever saw even a single jump cut on TCM until about 6 weeks ago. Very annoying.
No problems with any other streaming service.
Has anyone else been experiencing a rash of jump cuts in film on Watch TCM recently?
Here's a message I just sent to the Watch TCM PR person:
Something has gone wrong recently with films viewed on Watch TCM.
I've been noticing this for the last month or so (over 5-6 films), but it seems...
With 3 months to go in my 2nd year of subscription to the Criterion Channel, I have watched an even 100 films on the channel, including 40 foreign films. Between CC and Watch TCM, I'm in movie heaven!
Here's a photo I came across last week that shows Fonda in 1948, when he initiated the role on stage. The play ran for 1,157 performances. Not sure how many of those featured Fonda in the leading role, but his familiarity with the role no doubt helped him portray in the character in the film...
I saw a review on Amazon that stated the audio on the new blu-ray was out of sync. Has anyone noticed this?
I have a copy, but I haven't opened it yet, as I streamed the film recently on Amazon.
I'd never seen the entire film before, but it was a treat. Truly a great film. Funny...
I picked up the three 1940s musicals for $21, especially since they are all 3-strip technicolor productions, and I am trying to watch as many of these as I can (I've seen 60 out of the total list of 547). Also My Gal Sal (another 3-strip), and The Tall Men.
Can you access the Watch TCM streaming service through AppleTV? I get it through Roku. It's far preferable to having to tune in at a certain time or record something,. There are about 200 movies available for streaming at a time.
About 2 1/2 years ago, I decided to focus on watching films I'd never seen. Filmstruck was a huge help in that regard, and I managed to watch 75 films through that service over the course of a year before it was cancelled. I was heartbroken when Filmstruck folded, but fortunately I found Watch...
My subscription charge for the next year of the Criterion Channel is coming up in 6 weeks. I've watched exactly 50 films on the current subscription, so I've certainly gotten my money's worth. I have another 30 or so picked out to watch, so I will certainly re-new.
Regarding SpaceX's Starlink, from Bloomberg article today that discusses the likelihood that Starlink will be spun off from SpaceX as a publicly-traded company:
“This is going to turn SpaceX into a company that is providing service to consumers, which we are excited about,” Shotwell said. The...
SpaceX's Starlink will be far more likely than 5G to be able to deliver fast wireless internet to rural and underserved locations.
There are 240 Starlink satellites up right now (SpaceX launches them 60 at a time), with perhaps a thousand more that will be launched over the remainder of the...
Magnificent Obsession, All that Heaven Allows, and Written on the Wind were recently available on Watch TCM, but they are gone now. I only watched the last one, as I have the Criterion blu-rays for the other two. The transfer for WotW was excellent, so I am assuming Criterion would have an...
I've been following a thread on Hi Def Forum for years that tracks Blu-ray/DVD sales. The numbers for 2019 are in this post:
https://www.highdefforum.com/1425447-post5396.html
From the post by Bruce Ames:
Last week's numbers are in, so the 2019 totals are (in millions):
OD: $3393.39 -17.6%...
I love Katharine Hepburn, with my favorite performances of hers being in Alice Adams, Holiday, The Philadelphia Story, Bringing Up Baby, Woman of the Year, and The African Queen. Hepburn along with Ginger Rogers has probably given me the most enjoyment of any actress.
Among those I dislike...
I also had an issue with the closed captioning. I was checking out some of the classic cartoons (Snow White, Fantasia) and noticed that I couldn't get the captions off, even when the Roku settings had them off. Then tried some live-action films and had the same problem. I turned off the...
I would contribute $5 to DVD Beaver once or twice a year like I do to several sites through random Paypal donations, but I don't want to have any recurring charge..
Criterion has been working out well after a sketchy roll-out. I've watched 32 films on the service since April.
The viewing experience has been very stable for me since, say, June, and the transfers have mostly been excellent. One wrinkle they still have to iron out is getting the special...
