Sadly my father Anthony has passed away, he made a special mention to say goodbye to all his friends on this forum. His cancer was diagnosed only a couple of weeks before his death and we can be consoled knowing he enjoyed films and books right up until the end.
he was barely able to talk but...
My son bought me a surprise present ... the Kino 4k 'The Good, The Bad and the Ugly'. It arrived yesterday from Amazon, so I went there to see how much the first two in the trilogy are. I'm keen to get all three in 4K.
However, as my son found, the cost to buy and post to Austalia is prohibitive...
When Robyn and I contracted Covid towards the end of last month, I initially planned a season of films to sustain and revive us. Very ambitious. Too ambitious.
As many fellow-sufferers would have expected, we found it impossible to summon the mental energy to watch anything relatively...
So my rat test result for my wife Robyn and I is positive .. hers is worse than mine; she's pretty well bed-bound, venturing forth for maybe an hour at night to watch something preferably trivial on television, and eat some icecream.
Mine is milder ... fuzzy achine head, dizziness, nasal...
Will this stay missing in action?
'New Faces' of 1954 was the film realisation of the very famous stage revue 'New Faces of 1952'. I have the original RCA theatre soundtrack and the even better Jasmine (UK) CD version which boasts very robust sound. But I would love to be able to see this on...
I am amazed that the 1934 pre-code movie 'Tarzan and HIs Mate', featuring Romanian actor Johnny Weissmuller and Irish actress Maureen O'Sullivan, hasn't made it to Blu ray yet. Unbelievable!
Mind you, it's equally surprising that its 1932 precursor 'Tarzan The Ape Man' hasn't appeared either --...
I've just located what appears to be a terrific German documentary from 1917 entitled HItler's Hollywood, described as "Rüdiger Suchsland examines German cinema from 1933, when the Nazis came into power, until 1945 when the Third Reich collapsed".
My cursory glance suggests this...
This was such a useful navigation aid.
I would, as advised at the top of the forum page, post in the 'forum help and feedback area' but you don't include in that banner a link, and I can't find a link anywhere.
Anyway, please bring back the 'new' tag if it's possible. Or have I lost it...
With news of a forthcoming French set of Hitchcock's films in UHD, I set myself the task of assessing Hitch's greatest movies (in my assessment, that is!) in the hope that we may one day see these as they truly deserve.
My shortlist of his greatest, in no particular order, is:
The 39 Steps
The...
I've just been listening to a new Blu ray acquisition, a life-affirming operatic gala concert from Berlin's famous Waldbuhne ampitheatre starring Anna Netrebko, Placido Domingo and Rolando Villazon.
This is a triumphant concert which is perfectly staged and lit in its vast outdoor setting...
Here's a URL to Fnac in France, announcing Eisenstein's 'Ivan the Terrible' for Blu ray release this month (April).
https://www.nl.fnac.be/a13266672/Ivan-le-Terrible-Combo-Blu-ray-DVD-Blu-Ray
It's very scant on details ... is this just Part One, or Parts One and Two? And there's no mention of...
In the Kino Lorber thread, 'RichardBurton84' posted the URL to an eight-minute documentary from Mosfilm about their current film restoration projects.
I'm reposting it here for the benefit of people who missed it in that thread.
The most exciting aspect for me is the mouth-watering prospect of...
Henri Georges Clouzot is best known for his thrillers ... he was known as the French Hitchcock for his movies such as 'Diabolique', 'Race for Life' and 'The Wages of Fear'.
He also directed one of my all-time favourite movies, just being released in the UK, 'The Mystery of Picasso', a dazzling...
I just ordered the two-disc Criterion Blu ray edition of 'His Girl Friday' from Amazon.co.uk for what I thought was an amazing price of $28 Australian ($21 US) including shipping to Australia.
It was such a good price that I had to go back after purchase and check that I had indeed bought the...
They're creeping out on Blu ray......
'The Gay Divorcee' is available from Amazon.es on the New Line Films label (a Warners subsidiary?) at a reasonable 16 Euros price tag, and 'Follow the Fleet' is there as well, at 20 Euros.
Meanwhile there's a Blu ray box set of seven titles (Top Hat, Swing...
I cannot think of a more fitting memorial for the wonderful Debbie Reynolds than to see her charming performance in the 1950 musical 'Two Weeks with Love', where she plays a supporting role to Jane Powell and Ricardo Montalbano, preserved on Blu ray. They are fine in their roles, but little...
The Beaver site has listed for release on May 27
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers Blu-ray BOX [Blu-ray] (The Gay Divorcee, Top Hat, Follow the Fleet, Swing Time, Shall We Dance, Carefree, The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle) Region FREE JP IVC
It's not a complete set .. missing Flying Down...
This has always been one of my favourite musicals ...
I'm grateful to have the present Region One Blu ray of it, as a faded memory of a wonderful movie .. but I'm wondering if there is any chance at all that a halfway decent restoration could be undertaken, to at least possibly give it a...
My copy of Criterion's Complete Monterey Pop Blu ray set should be arriving soon, courtesy of the Amazon sale ...
Can anyone who already has this tell me if all the extras have been given the full Blu ray treatment, or are some/most of the extras just SD ports -- in which case I'll have to keep...
I played My Fair Lady to a group of family and friends last night -- the first opportunity to view it in full since my return from a European holiday .. and found that it broke-up and froze during chapter 23 .. a very important and totally delightful scene ! I was able to restart from about ten...
My copy of the 50th Anniverary edition of MFL arrived this morning.
I'll wait till the weekend to view the main movie .. a special gathering is planned, and I'm sure we'll love it.
But I thought a new thread might be useful to let any news appear about whether there's going to be a recall for...
I got an email this morning (July 14) that UK Amazon has already shipped to me here in Australia the new 4k Blu ray transfer of 'The Third Man' ...
This is a week before its official release date. Does this often happen with Amazon.co.uk? I'm just hoping they haven't shipped by mistake the...
Has anyone evaluated this disc?
I've read elsewhere that the widescreen version on this disc (the proper ratio and the only reason I'd opt to buy this edition) is a bit patchy in quality .. has anyone here compared it to the full-screen version available elsewhere?
I see that in France the wonderful movie 'Le Bossu' starring Daniel Auteil is being released ... but without English subtitles!
Why do the French deny themselves international sales in this way?
The television mini-series 'The Count of Monte Cristo' with Gerard Depardieu and Ornella Muti is...
Vale Ron Moody (91)
Though Ron featured in a couple of great episodes of 'The Avengers', I think my favourite of his roles is as Fagin in a little movie entitled 'Oliver!'.
This could have been a GREAT movie except for the miscasting of a totally wimpish little boy as our eponymous hero, and...
The home page for Blu ray forum has suddenly gone crazy and almost unreadable.
Is it just my browser?
My normal spread has become a narrow centre strip making it very difficult to scan the forum topics, and looking shrunken and non-intuitive when you open a thread to read.
I suspect this is...
I've mentioned this in another thread, but I'm totally perplexed at why studios as good at their job as Warners fail miserably when it comes to giving us what most of us want in our favourite musicals .... direct chapter access to our favourite numbers!
The latest 'Musicals' collection from...
I've been searching on and off for some years in the hope that someone, somewhere, will release on Blu ray the terrific French television mini-series of The Count of Monte Cristo from 1998,starring Gerard Depardieu.
I finally found it ... as 'El Conde de Montecristo .. on amazon.es. But dammit...
