I find my netbook fine for occasional use but not really for longer than 30 minutes at a time.

I had this problem once & it turned out ot be the infrared, I would start by disabling/re- enabling devices one by one while connected to power, hopefully you will identify the culprit.

Another vote for VLC here for its speed and low overheads.
