I've been obsessing about OUTLAWS (1960) lately, which I find to be a truly remarkable series, particularly that first season. I'm hard-pressed to think of a classic TV western as dark or (occasionally) violent as this one. With a two-season run and some high-profile guest stars, one would think...
Sorry I haven't been able to check in here in a while. Life.
Tim Lucas, editor-publisher of Video Watchdog Magazine, has THE DEFENDERS as THE TOP RELEASE OF 2016:

Also I heard from Todd VanDerWerff who put it on Vox's...
Outstanding. Highest I've seen it. This spike is likely due in no small part to LA Times and Wall Street Journal, both of which were from Shout's effort.
I didn't agree with everything in the WSJ article, but I thought it was fine. Re: the Minnow statement -- we should not overlook his added caveat: "you'll be inclined to doubt his word" as well as this countering statement: "there was no shortage of gripping prime-time fare scattered among the...
Just heard that the Wall Street Journal asked for pics, so their article is on the way, and that can only help the seasons 2--4 cause. Great to see the Evanier piece.
I'm continuing to flog the heck out of it on social media as much as I can, with several thousand followers between my Facebook...
Okay, my bad, Sean. The loud groan you hear is me letting out a loud groan. Yes, we're about a third of the way. My misinterpretation of the numbers and the nut.
Well, I'm still plugging away. Maybe harder now. This time it's personal... We will get those other seasons.
I'll see if I can find out the numbers. I'd heard there was going to be an LA Times piece but was hesitant to say anything, since the Wall Street Journal piece hasn't happened yet (at least, that I know of). Hoping it does.
My friend (another DEFENDERS fan) who knows Glenn Erickson/DVD Savant...
Sean, I was asked to do commentaries on several of my favorite episodes, and had a terrific experience. And I'm right there with you; both THRILLER and COMBAT were such exciting releases--a couple of my favorites too.
Really looking forward to Steve Mitchell's Larry Cohen documentary. I've known Steve since I did some commentary on the THRILLER set. Terrific guy, and likes all the right TV. I thought his COMBAT stuff was excellent.
Stephen, very much enjoying your thoughts here.
As Sean said, that is excellent. Thank you for posting it.
I like your observation about Lawrence Preston and agree completely. It's so refreshing. Also find it refreshing when Preston's eyes light up when he hears that a case being handed to him is "murder one." Such a nice human touch. Man...
"The only way anyone is going to have an effect is if they go out and buy a few dozen sets to give out to all of their friends and acquaintances as presents."
Well, if this were a more typical release I'd agree with you (and buying multiple copies will certainly help). But in this case...
That was an excellent idea, Sean!
I exchanged messages with author and journalist Mark Harris who freelances for Time and Entertainment Weekly where he has a regular column (also the author of several books, including "Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War"). He was...
Okay, so I just hooked Todd VanDerWerff up with Shout to get a screener. They sent him one and he said he usually gets their stuff, but not this time. He has a big following/readership so here’s hoping it helps.
I just wanted to mention how elated I was to find this thread. I had searched...
I did indeed, Ian, and he seemed very pleased, and maybe pleasantly surprised at the passion for the show. I told him there are a bunch of people who are determined to help make this happen.
I chatted with my friend at Shout today and filled him in on the sort of grass roots fan support for THE DEFENDERS. He was really glad to hear this and it was quite plain when talking to him that, not only is he a fan of the show himself, he also appreciates that the next three seasons are even...
Apologize if this was already posted and I didn't see it. Interesting piece on the "finding their way" nature of the first season, and how THE DEFENDERS should be given a chance beyond that. He's tougher on S1 episodes than I am. I'm finding the great ones far outweigh any weak ones...
For me, one of the most fascinating facets of Marshall's performance is how he handles the lengthy cross-examinations. His approach with Frank McHugh is deliberate and methodical, capped by that stunning moment where his eyes light up. Marshall is so damn good at letting us see that his wheels...
Just to help dissipate that "wake" feeling, even though my contact said releasing season 2 "doesn't make sense at this point," I'm hanging onto the words "at this point" to fuel some confidence that the tide will indeed turn. It's amazing what can happen online. I'm ever the optimist.
I'm glad I'm not the only one finding these addictive. I agree, "The Crusader" is excellent. Anyone who thinks Robert Reed = BRADY BUNCH needs to check these out. I find the father-son dynamic on this series to be subtle and entirely believable.
I just heard from someone that Shout! is cutting back--as of recently--on review copies, which could explain a lot. I think a 50+ year old series needs all the press help it can get.
I remember posting here years ago, after several RAWHIDE season sets had come out, and there was a long silence before anything else was released, and people were saying they never would be. But they eventually were. So anything can happen, and I never say never. I had heard DEFENDERS was never...
