The Film Forum in NY is currently presenting a series that's about film vs. digital restoration. I'm all for it, as long as the film looks as good. But what about all those movies that haven't been and never will be restored? Is the DVD of "Altered States" the best we'll ever have?
I went to the screening at the Walter Reade last night. It wasn't a big audience, but this may have been because they had a sign at the box office warning about the faded print! The editor of Film Comment gave a short introduction and mentioned that he was told it was a great print (which they...
Yeah, I've read many of her reviews (probably hundreds) and she's always interesting, even if I often don't agree. And she did have her biases (as we all do). For example, she LOVED Brian De Palma movies a little too much and HATED Clint Eastwood with a passion. But I loved that she never...
I saw ALTERED STATES when it was first released and many times since. I actually just watched the DVD about a month or two ago. I think it's a very flawed film, but I love it anyway. It's such a weird mixture of things, and it certainly aims high. I'd love to see a Blu-Ray as well as this...
If you're looking for actual war films that were made not long after the wars were over, I would pick the following: (WWII) Attack! (Vietnam) The Boys in Company C, The Deer Hunter. (late 90s, post 9-11) Three Kings
I'm pretty sure it was intentional, as they ran the credits in the beginning and then did the thing with drawing the curtains. I'd been to that theater before and had never seen them draw the curtains.
Excellent review. I'd like to share my own first experience with this film. I actually saw it in a tiny theater, so it wasn't 70mm and it certainly didn't do the movie justice. BUT the theater did something odd, which I thought was pretty cool. They started the movie with the end credits...
I think it's more likely to be "Somebody Killed her Husband," which has never been on DVD. I'm not even sure if it was ever on VHS. And it was released in 1978.
As for TLG, I'd prefer to get a DVD with lots of extras, but I'll take whatever I can get. Especially since I've been hearing...
For me, there are things about both cuts that I like and dislike, so I'd like to recut the movie myself! I'm expecting this to be a third version. And while I would I agree that the theatrical cut should be included, I don't think it's likely. Mann has a habit of rewriting history. The...
I saw a lot double features when I was growing up in the seventies. The oddest was probably "The Exorcist" (during its 1976 reissue) with "Freebie and the Bean."
I spoke to my source (who is a music manager at my local Barnes & Noble) and I have a couple of corrections. He said the sale will actually start July 14th and ALL Criterion titles will be 50% off. I'm pretty sure it's DVD only and not BluRay.
Hello, everyone. I just wanted to announce that starting July 7th, Barnes & Noble is going to have a special on Criterion DVDs - 30% off. It's only going to be certain Criterion titles and I believe they're going to change the titles every week. probably through the end of the month. That's all...
I would definitely believe the Winkler version. His description of Bogdnavich at the time matches others I've heard. I read somewhere that many in the industry really enjoyed it when his career when down the drain. As for the box office of Nikelodeon, according to James Monaco's book...
I saw "The Town that Dreaded Sundown" in the theater, I believe as the second part of a double bill with "Final Chapter Walking Tall." I loved it at the time, BUT I was only about 13. So when I finally see it again, I'll keep my expectations low!
I grew up watching those channels, too. Not only were old movies always on, but there was hardly anything else to watch! I must have seen dozens of John Wayne movies as a kid in the early 70s. AND I remember the week WOR ran King Kong every night of the week (this was in prime time!).
The first VCR I saw was in 1977. A friend's parents had it (they were in the business of making pirate 8 track tapes). I remember the machine being huge. I also remember that they had "Dog Day Afternoon," but it was only half the movie. I have no idea if this was BETA I or what. Later, in...
It's great to see so many fans of this great movie. I first saw it on commercial TV back in the seventies, then later on VHS and DVD. Last summer I finally saw it in a theater, at the Film Forum in NY. It was a terrific experience. The theater was full and the audience just loved it. As for...
I've been dying to see a proper release of this also. I'll bet there's a rights problem. Maybe something to do with the Ray Charles song at the end? It's also possible that they simply can't find a good print of the movie, though I think it's unlikely.
