    Questions concerning Blu-ray video/colour

Thanks you guys, this has cleared up some of the confusion. I just have a few more questions / requests-for-clarification:   - Would it be safe to assume, purely in a hypothetical context (as in, if both sets of ranges were hypothetically full-range 8-bits-per-channel 0-255), that RGB...

    Questions concerning Blu-ray video/colour

I have questions regarding the allocation of bits per channel for Blu-ray video, said to be natively "8-bit 4:2:0 YCbCr." Does this mean that Y, Cb, and Cr were given 8 bits each (24-bits per pixel)? Does it equate with a PC's 24-bit True-Color (RGB)?   It is my understanding that, with...

    Connection Question

As Robert mentioned, an up-converting receiver would be best, as it allows for only one HDMI output with a diverse array of video inputs. However, up-converting receivers tend to be expensive, and if you buy one without that ability, I recommend connecting the XBOX and PS3 directly to the...

Does the PS3 output in only 5.1 surround?

I believe if your Playstation 3 firmware is relatively recent, it should convert Dolby TruHD to 8 channels of PCM to be outputted to the receiver. I also heard though, that with PS3's newest firmware, you can output a true Dolby TruHD bitstream to be decoded by your receiver. I cannot confirm...

Little overwhelmed and need help planning

Let me set you up with a couple of hypothetical setups. Plan A: Designate a section in the front of your room for your "equipment rack," which includes an A/V Receiver/Amplifier and Video Source(s) (Video-game console, Movie console, Television Console). Next, connect these video consoles to...

    First home theater system

In addition to the importance of speaker quality, Just set some ground rules for yourself on which digital audio decoders are necessary in your receiver. Yes, 7.1 is the "newest and best" out there, but there isn't a lot of media with native 7.1 or even 6.1 sound encoded. That having been said...

    Analogue Lines of Resolution: Confused.

Thank you Allan! I think... I understand now, I just might have to study your post for a while. But cheers! I'm sure I'll figure it out.

Want to upgrade my sound system....

^ Sorry for the quad-post, I just discovered that this morning. Either the server or my internet was lagging last night, and I thought I had only posted once, and now I cannot delete them

    Analogue Lines of Resolution: Confused.

Thank you for clarifying that for me. So, if these "wide dots" on NTSC displays actually add up to 525 lines, visible or not, Does this mean that if DVD has 500 native lines of resolution (or so i've often read) that all 500 can be displayed on a "480i" TV? Or will 480 lines and below always be...

Want to upgrade my sound system....

I guess it would really depend on the extent to which you wish to upgrade. For example, an A/V amplifier/receiver that I would consider one step up from yours would be one capable of [Dolby Digital EX / Pro-LogicIIx] and [DTS ES / Neo:6 / 96/24], Which will basically give you a good 5.1/6.1...

    Analogue Lines of Resolution: Confused.

I've noticed that the number of signal lines is greater than the number of displayed (visible) lines of resolution in analogue displays. Why is this? (e.g. 525 vs 480, 625 vs 576, 750 vs 720, 1125 vs 1080..or 1035? I fail to see the pattern.) Is this difference only in vertical resolution? Or...
