Universal Backlot Series of Claudette Colbert titles for November

I’m very excited about this too. Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife is the only one I have seen and it’s a great screwball comedy. I’m looking forward to the others as Claudette was a very good actress and I have liked all the films I’ve seen so far of hers. I agree with jdee28 about getting more early...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

I recently received the Gary Cooper set and agree with Dan that these films are much better quality than the old bootlegs we’ve been watching for years. There is one scene in Operator 13 where Gary’s character watches in hiding as a fellow spy is being executed. After he is killed we cut back to...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

It's the same as the VHS version that was released back in the 90s but with a sharper transfer. I'm not 100% positive it's pan and scan since there are no obvious jumps like in some P&S films but it's not letterbox so they either did P&S or just cut the sides off.

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

I had heard from a reliable source in the film community that Cooper’s WB films may be getting a commercial release but I guess I’m not surprised they’re being released through the archives. Either way I am thrilled since he is my tip top fave. The link for the set still isn’t working but I’ll...

Icons of Screwball Comedy Vols 1/2 in August

This is great news!! I'm especially excited about the Jean Arthur films. If You Could Only Cook is one of my faves of hers.

I agree that we are getting closer everyday to the end of dvd/cd sections in retail places but I imagine the online market will remain pretty strong for the forseeable future. I like the idea of downloading and burning my own discs like I was describing with the EZ Takes service but I do not...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

GlennH, The July schedule was posted in a thread on the TCM message board. They always do that so we can actually see four months at a time. I’m also in agreement about wanting to have physical media instead of a download only set up. I’ve had the same problems as Dan with external hard...

Fox: Call Her Savage and any other Bows you have

Four of the seven silent films Gary Cooper made at Paramount in ’28 are also lost including The First Kiss, Legion of the Condemned (both costarring Fay Wray), Beau Sabreur (only the trailer survives), and Half a Bride. Lilac Time, Doomsday, and The Shopworn Angel survived as well as some others...

Fox: Call Her Savage and any other Bows you have

Prints of all Clara’s talkies still exist but I’ve never seen any copies of Her Wedding Night or Kick In floating around either. I know there are a few of her silents as well that are still out there but not in bootleg or any other form including her first film Beyond the Rainbow and Empty...

Fox: Call Her Savage and any other Bows you have

Hula, Mantrap, and It are my faves too. I imagine Children of Divorce would be my very favorite if I’m ever able to see it. That is my holy grail of films and the Library of Congress has a restored version so keep your fingers crossed that it will come out of obscurity someday. It stars Clara...

Fox: Call Her Savage and any other Bows you have

Early in Clara’s career (once she had left New York for Hollywood) she was loaned out quite a bit and made two silents for Fox: The Best Bad Man and The Ancient Mariner both released in 1925 and both presumed lost. She also made a handful for WB and MGM while the others are either for her home...

Fox: Call Her Savage and any other Bows you have

Clara Bow is bar none my favorite actress and a fascinating person. She truly had (and still has) screen magic. She appeals to both men and women (a rare quality indeed) and is absolutely a joy to watch. I have copies of all the bootleg versions of her films in circulation; most are very poor...

4 more Universal "backlot" titles on July 7, 2009

I just preordered the precode collection yesterday and this is more great news! With their holdings of the Paramount catalog from ’29-’49, Universal has more films I want than any other studio. I am a little disappointed though that instead of releasing a Cooper film new to dvd, they are...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

I had a dream quite a while back that I was in a huge warehouse full of shelves of movies. You went through and looked at all the film cans and when you found one you wanted you took it to a desk up front and they would make a dvd copy of it for you and then you paid for it like a normal dvd...

Watching a movie that turns out bad

Hi Jon, What bothers me most about The Fountainhead is the dialogue. Ayn Rand insisted on also writing the screenplay and wouldn’t allow the actors to stray from the script at all. Thus the conversation seem very stilted and worse than what’s in most soap operas. People don’t talk that way and...

NOTHING FROM FOX after THE ROBE?

I'm hopeful they'll put out the two movie Clara Bow made for them, Call Her Savage (1932) and Hoopla! (1933). Those were her last two films and they could package them together in one release. She is sadly underrepresented on dvd and this would be great to have.

Watching a movie that turns out bad

Over the past decade or so I’ve tried a few times to watch Casablanca but every time it turns out the same. I get about 20 minutes into it, space out from boredom and change the channel. It also took me three tries to get through The Fountainhead even though Gary Cooper is my favorite actor and...

Pre-Code Hollywood Coll. from Universal (April 09)

Simon, Universal owns the majority of Paramount’s films made between 1929 and 1949. I’m just as excited as y’all about this set and will definitely purchase it as soon as it’s available in the hopes they will keep ‘em coming!! I would love to see another Gary Cooper set like the one they...

WANTED: Warner Home Video Westerns Collection Vol. 2

Hi Jim_K, I would also buy any set that had a good print of The Hanging Tree. You’re right in that this film does need some work but the problem with that is while it’s part of Warner’s catalog, Gary Cooper’s daughter also has a share in it as it was made by his production company, Baroda. I...

New dvd out on Meet John Doe

Hi Russell_G, It was made at Warner's so they would have been the original owners. It would be great if they could get it back and put out a proper release of the original negative. You really should see it as it is a wonderful film. Not counting Sergeant York which I watched in school in...

New dvd out on Meet John Doe

Meet John Doe is my favorite film and out of the different PD versions I have seen, this region free version from Amazon UK is the best. It has some extra features on it too and I can definitely recommend this version. Meet John Doe [1941] (NTSC): Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward...

Paramount Is Awake. Let's Start Asking For Stuff

I would also looooove to see Paramount release some of their silents; particularly the ones with Gary Cooper and Clara Bow. Ms. Bow is pitifully underrepresented on DVD and a box set of some of her Paramount films would be wonderful. One of the movies I want to see the most is Children of...

How will the disastrous economy affect the release of new catalog titles?

The same thing happened during the Depression, obviously not for dvd releases but with decreased movie attendance. However, the studios were able to draw people back in with more films featuring sex and violence (what most of us would think of as the typical pre-code film). It was still a...

New article about Fox catalog titles

It is wonderful that there are people in place who care about the classics and continue to release such great products. I have preordered the Murnau/Borzage set and can't wait to see good quality prints of those films. My wish list would include Ten North Frederick with Gary Cooper along...

Opinions About "Man Of The West"

Here’s something I thought was interesting about the film. Julie London’s character, Billie, feels comfortable and safe around Link even after knowing of his brutal past. After the stripping scene, she doesn’t immediately put her clothes back on once she and Link are out in the barn. I think...

Opinions About "Man Of The West"

Hi Robin, I love Love in the Afternoon and it's one of my friend's favorite films. It's funny how some movies just don't find an audience when they are released and only later are they appreciated. It's a Wonderful Life is probably the best example of that.

Opinions About "Man Of The West"

To understand why Man of the West did not do well at the box office, we need to put ourselves back in 1958 and see it from the viewpoint of audiences then. To people around the world, Gary Cooper represented the best of the American man. He had been playing those roles since 1926 and that was...
