If it is indeed the same source, then some color correction has been applied.

Look at #8. What's going on here?
As I wrote: No, I don't know how the film looked originally.
Read my post again: TO MY EYE it looks more pleasing. TO MY EYE it doesn't look like a mess. In no way did I insinuate that the newer transfer is incorrect.
Thank god someone still remembers the exact color palette after a whopping 56...
For those interested in an HD version of this film similar to the color scheme of Fox's 2004 SD release, there's a German Blu-ray out that uses an older transfer.
Borders are a little more cropped than on the Fox BD, compression could be better and there are a few specks and dirt particles...

Since I don't own the Blu-ray - and probably never will under these conditions - I can only assume that the right lightning bolt is completely missing, but - as is not unusual with lightning - this probably lasts only a second or a split second.
Nevertheless my example aptly demonstrates the...

Actually, it's Universal's fault.
They own the movie outside of US territories and did all the mastering and prep on GLADIATOR (Jeff Kleist, The Digital Bits).
By the way, has Ridley Scott already reacted to this mess. He's said to be a perfectionist. I can't imagine he likes to see his hard...
Someone here in Germany created two .gifs comapring the Blu-Ray to an HDTV version of that movie.
What you see is one of the catapults shooting a fireball - it's been deleted by automatic video mastering tools for most of it's screen time: http://forum.cinefacts.de/6342075-post216.html
No better news for THE UNINVITED. Although the transfer is progressive this time and a bit better than that for ISLAND, it's still fuzzy, dark and suffers from heavy video artefacts. Most likely it's an 80s transfer badly transferred to the PAL standard. With the exeption of KING OF THE...
I hate to disappoint you but my Spanish boxed set including ISLAND OF LOST SOULS arrived today. Well, almost everything looks splendid. It's a colorful set containing three DVDs in slim cases housing two movies each. It's bathed in original poster art and has a marvellous 38 page booklet (in...
Does it look better than the old OOP and hard-to-get Roan Group release? After hunting it down for months I finally got a copy at ebay for a reasonable price last year. Don't tell me I could have waited for VCI to simply use the Roan transfer for one of their new releases. If I remember...
WESTERN UNION and MINISTRY OF FEAR are also out in Australia. Both feature audio commentaries by Australian film scholars. HUMAN DESIRE is out in Spain. As opposed to the hard-to-get Japanese DVD, this features only a passable 4x3 tranfer, but it's better than nothing.
zonadvd usually links to dvdgo.com where I purchased all my Spanish DVD up to now. Recently though the dvdgo site has been relauched and has some serious problems processing orders - if the site is up at all. In the meantime I recommend ordering at: www.fnac.es or...
Currently Movies Unlimited and TCM only distribute films from the fist wave of the Archive titles.
Does anyone know when the newer titles will be available?
Will they be added monthly just like on the WB site?
Quietly and largely unnoticed, two of the most sought-after classic horror titles from anyone's list seem to have been officially released: ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1932) and THE UNINVITED (1944) ...in Spain! Grandes Clásicos del Cine de Terror - Volumen 1 Grandes Clásicos...
I'm extremely thrilled that Warners are continuing their Forbidden Hollywood series. I would have wished for a different selection of titles (RED DUST would have been the no-brainer), but I like Wellman and Young immensely, so I will certainly buy it.
BUDDY BUDDY is out in Spain (by an obscure company named "Creative Films", probably a sub-label of Suevia). It's uncut and in 2.35:1 widescreen but not anamorphically enhanced. Image quality is really bad, dark, muddy, showing little detail. Spanish and original English language tracks are...
I've been shopping in Spain again. Lang's HUMAN DESIRE has been reissued there, now by Columbia. Unfortunately it's not identical to the aforementioned Japanese widescreen version, but represents an open matte presentation of that movie that lacks a bit in sharpness and contrast. Still...
As expected the plastic case of my set was slightly cracked when it arrived at my German home (sent by Axelmusic from Britain). Well, I've never complained about slightly damaged packages before - I guess I don't care too much about the packaging anyway. At least I understand we can't expect all...
My DVD arrived today and I'm very happy with it. Watched the Preview Version first. What a wonderful film! I uploaded some screenshots from all three versions and compared them to the previous NTSC und PAL transfers on this German site: Left to right: 1. 2000 transfer of Restored Version...
I'm far from condemning the release. In fact, being a huge Welles fan and of this film in particular, I'll pick it up as soon as it's out. Having all three versions of the film (of which the preview version with Mancini's opening music intact is still my favourite) and some superlative...
If the new DVD features the same old transfer of TOUCH OF EVIL I'll be deeply disappointed. There are numerous examples of films from that era that look a lot better even on standard definition media. In my opinion Universal's 2000 transfer is really soft and shows little detail. Please look...
Well, I did "notice" the cropping anyway but I agree it is probably insignificant and omits no essential picture information. I believe having a transfer that shows all the available image information of the exposed negative can't really hurt. Sad though that none of the two aspect ratios...
DVDBeaver has caps of both Blu-Ray versions in full resolution: How the West Was Won Blu-ray - Henry Fonda* Gregory Peck Debbie Reynolds James Stewart John Wayne In a stationary screenshot, the smilebox version looks quite odd to me. Things may be different with a moving picture though...
Not anamorphically enhanced? That would be a great letdown and unusual for Classic Media. The vertical squeezing of the subtitles in some of the screenshots indicate that it might be coded 16:9 after all...
