    OT: Ventilated Smoking Room?

As a cigar smoker, and having worked / designed abatement projects (in an earlier life), here's my opinion. To smoke "stink free," at least as much as possible....As others said you need ventilation. Actually, you need slightly more than ventilation, you need what's called negative pressure...

First Post - Help poor Newbie

Actually, I do get a split second green screen, but not every time. I never even noticed it until it was mentioned. As for gear I have DirecTV HD DVR Sony BDP350 Xbox 360 Older philips 16:9 HDTV CRT Everything is connected via component. Sorry for any confusion I caused.

First Post - Help poor Newbie

I have a 254 and don't have a "green screen" between HD and SD channels. I have all my components, with the exception of my 360 going into the receiver, and use the receiver's out to the TV.

    Newbie buying new stereo

Many companies still sell 2 channel stereos. HK is one of them. If you are only going to have 2 speakers, you might want to find a multichannel receiver that has a "phantom" mode. This will simulate a center channel. It actually sounds pretty good in the sweet spot.

Blu Ray - Netflix movie downloads quest.

Ok, I have had netflix on my xbox for a couple days now...I'm assuming the experience is the same on the Blu players as well. Here's one guy opinion: Picture Quality - Ok to Good, depending on my connection speed. The picture is in SD, but its not blurry or anything. They do have a few HD...

Need help with Receiver set up.

I'd check 2 things before going on a shopping spree (granted that does not take much convinving for me!) 1. Humming may be a very BAD grounding problem. If your receiver is plugged into a power strip, unplug everything and run the receiver power directly to the wall 2. If that does not fix...

    New TV for Grandparents

Well, my grandparents old huge console TV finally but it after about 20 years. So, I think that's a very good early christmas gift to get them. Seems easy enough, right? Grandparents don't want or will use any on screen guides, and simply want to click through the channels looking for...

    Sony BD350 and HK254

Sony tech support says no, but I might just order up the cable and try anyway. Can anyone here give it a shot with theirs first?

    Sony BD350 and HK254

I noticed in the BluRay setup I can choose where the sound comes from, and where the video comes from. If looks like I can probably connect the HDMI and use it only for the sound. If I have to run the Blu Ray component cables direct to my TV I will. I emailed sony tech support to verify this...

    Sony BD350 and HK254

That's kinda what i figured. Im using composite cables because my TV does not have HDMI. It's only about 5 years old (Philips CRT HDTV) and my significant other would not let me decommission its yet. It's my understanding that receivers will not "downconvert" an HDMI in to a component out...

    Sony BD350 and HK254

I'm not sure if I have everything set up properly...here's my issue. I am not getting any kind of indication that the receiver is getting a DTS master or dolby true HD signal. I just get a "DTS" on the receiver display. The bluray is set to output DTS-HD, and the disc (rolling stones) is...

    New Home Media Room

Speakers are a pretty personal thing. It all depends on how you perceive the sound. For example, I like my polk speakers, but not when they are connected to an Onkyo receiver. Its all personal preference. Go out and demo some speakers. Bring your favorite CD / DVD's and check out a few...

    Need more power-Harman Audio AVR347???

HK's are "underrated" compared to most other brands. HK uses all channels running to determine watts, while most others use 1 or 2 channels to determine power. You will be very surprised if you browse through some home audio magazines to see that many manufacturers claim 100 x 7 or some...

Help me pick an Ipod or MP3, please!

There is no AC adapter in the box (or at least not when I got mine a couple years ago). You can get them for about 10 bucks. I got one for travel. iTunes does not require you to use their store. You can rip all your CD's to the library for sync purposes. I put everything I owned on it and put...

    Teac - DX50 i --- dont laugh

You should be able to use the headphone out on your macbook and get a splitter from radio-shack that converts the headphone cable to RCA's. Then you should be able to connect to your stereo.

    Which Universal Remote?

I suggest Harmony. I just got a low end one this summer, and my "non tech" wife loves it. Sets everything up when changing sources for her. Setup is a breeze. Best purchase you will make.

Blu Ray - Netflix movie downloads quest.

Well, I'm going to try the service on Xbox Live later in november. Netflix jst announced that HD content would also be available. I find that a little hard to swallow if it is only streaming media. I'll post a report then unless someone beats me to it.

New Home Theater Sysmte for Gaming

If you want to connect your 360 to the AVR, it needs at least a digital optical input. You will also need the HD pack for Xbox. If you dont already have the component cables for the X, you can also get the HDMI cable, and do a simple 1 cable hook up. As for brand, most people on this board...

    Bose audio problem

In my experience, different inputs always give different volume levels. I'm not sure if that option exists. The way I deal with it on my AVR is to set startup volume levels for each input.

Sound bars vs. multi speaker systems

While Robert's analogy is right (I have big boces too, much to my wife's dismay ) I am a fan of the newer sound-bars for their simplicity. I have been to a good shop and got a demo a couple and I was very surprised at how well the single speaker mimicd surround channels. The system won't...

Newbie needs home theater recommendation $600-$700

I would recommend separates as well. They give you more options to upgrade in the future. Most receivers now come with some sort of "universal" style remote, so you should be OK there. If not, get a Harmony remote (even used off ebay they are a great value). I would stay away from...
