The GWTW recordings were not multichannel. We transferred those from nitrate 35mm variable density push pull mono optical tracks. One cue had a separate vocal track"For He's a Jolly Good Fellow". That's about it.
Joe, Scott did indeed do the High Society work. I'm not sure where he mixed it. That was just prior to my return to MGM in 1992. Ted Hall at POP,with me supervising did the work on Deep in my Heart. From the 35mm three channel music recordings and the split track mono dialogue and effects track...
More history here. Image did their own transfer in the early 90s. I remastered it in 1996/97 to create new masters including 16/9(no HD yet)it was re-issued on laserdisc by Image in 97, from the master I created with Vilmos. This is also the transfer, though 16/9, that went on the first DVD...
" With the original negative used for the re-cutting, and previous home video versions taken from a used 70mm print, we finally have the opportunity to see the film with Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography coming to the fore. "
Just a note about the prior transfer, since it was among the last I...
If anyone's interested, the is a contemporary American Cinematographer article that deals with the 70mm conversion by Metrocolor that's an interesting read if you can find it. My local library doesen't even have the Reader's Guide to Periodic LIterature!
The picture quality is fine...What I miss on these releases is any sort of ancillary or production material...There are promos, etc, but i think that now since the series is owned by CBS, they might be reluctant to advertise a competeing network...
There is a gorgeous 4-track on La Mancha. I made a new DS track for the laserdisc(pre-AC-3 days)....Same with The Music Lovers, stunning mix. There is also a 6 track for 70mm on Tom Sawyer, found at the last minute in the Paramount vault of all places, not sure how it got there> The bummer...
and not just that but many would argue that The Sound of Music is a better film that it was a stage show. Carousel was ruined, too many cuts and the changes to the plot take away the emotional impact of Billy's death.
Yes, it was like that in the theater. Margaret Boothe(a very nice lady and one of the treasures of MGM and the motion picture industry, RIP) was the supervising film editor, and possibly was stone deaf by this point. But the "extras"s are all ADR'd anyway. Hell, I was watching parts of The Ten...
It's not cut, it's just moved....And it lost it's place too...So many bad decisions were made on so many levels with this film, still I went to see it twice! why not? Compared to the dreck being made now, this is a masterpiece....
regarding new Annie print, why in the hell would someone make a mono print? this was a dolby stereo film and there must be a DS soundrack negative, in fact, there may only be a DS neg, no need for mono as it's backward compatible. Perhaps the projection was mono?
Disc is stunning, a great representation of the restoration we did in 1996, they matched our color extremely well. And it sounds great, it sounds like the film sounds, someone mentioned lack of low end, well, possible the orchestra a bit uneven, but if you hear the chorus vocals during...
When Paramount made a new IP on this title back in 1991 the negative was aleady showing signs of YLF as Mr. Harris calls it. I'm pretty certain the blue that are seeing is the compensation for that issue. I know we were fighting the yellow all the time, as well as strange breathing and other...
No, ANNIE , sorry, i hit reply under that post and it ended up at the tail...Watching Fiddler now, i'll report back since I supervised the restoration of this back in 1996.
First impression, the sound sounds great, not sure what people are expecting or complaining about. More late.
It is unfair to compare a twenty year old film transfer, from a film element( a lo-con print made for Discovision for their old release), the only one in the vault that was suitable for a letterboxed, properly framed release to a restoration from the VistaVision negative in 2K. I took a lot of...
Regarding the boxed laser and VHS set we did in 1991...I produced the set, supervised the film transfer, wrote the liner notes and created the chapter notations. I also supervised, with Joe's able assistance the creation of the stereo track at Chace Productions.Just want to set the record clear.
