I also don't notice that much of a difference between cable HD and BluRay. Perhaps the best video image I've achieved on my 1080P 47" LCD panel was feeding WMV HD IMAX video from my Home Theater PC.
I'm thinking that the format price war is going to be in full force this holiday season. Just last week we had the MASSIVE Buy-one Get-one Blu Ray sales at CircuitCity, BestBuy, and FYE. My BluRay collection quintupled last week thanks to $14, $15 prices!
FYI most of the BluRay titles by Sony Pictures have built in video calibration screens including the SMPTE color pattern and other test images. I believe you can access them by going to the main title menu and pressing 9667.
Having been through a large number of digital cameras including one of the higher-end fixed lens offerings, the Fuji S7000, I now use only DSLRs for my serious photos. When compactness matters more than the art I still make good use of my Canon Powershots

I still have multiple VHS VCRs that I will use to record SD programs. Actually I have one for each TV in the house. My main system has a combo DVD recorder/VCR and my bedroom has a JVC SVHS unit. At one point in time I had literally hundreds of tapes which have now almost been entirely replaced...
I must agree that I was quite impressed with the appearance of the SD Transformers DVD on the PS3 connected to my 47" 1080P LCD. I think that picture-wise it is one of the best standard DVDs I've seen in a long time!
