Need Advice on stand alone DVR

Wow, a hole new area to explore HTPC. I'm new to HT and will be getting my first system soon. I never considered the HTPC, but now it makes perfect sense. Thanks for putting the idea into my head. Looks like if you get a PC with Windows XP or Vista media center edition, you can use is as a DVR...

Need Advice on stand alone DVR

Thanks David, Looks like it is best to not pursue the HD DVR at this time. I'd want to buy something that is still current and supported. Seems logical that something should come out before too long.

Need Advice on stand alone DVR

Hi, I'd like to get a DVR, and getting one from my cable company is out, since they have a shortage and only offer it to premium package customers. I'm looking for a DVR that will record HD. I don't see a lot of models that are stand alone and HD. Has anyone tried the Sony DHG-HDD250? I...

Standard Cable TV input--were to upscale?

Stephen, Thanks for the advice. I plan to switch over to digital cable, but not sure I also want to pay for the monthly HD option. I'm trying to find a DVR that is not tied to a monthly service--any ideas?

Standard Cable TV input--were to upscale?

Hi, currently I have standard cable without a set top box, just coaxial cable input. Currently I don't have an HT system but I'm planning to get one. What's the best way to upscale from 480i to 1080i? I'm thinking through my proposed receiver which is a Pioneer Elite and has the Faroudja DCDi...

    Swan Diva's not balanced?

Hi, just read a great review of the Swan Diva 6.1 (though I've been leaning towards the 5.1s). It says for a 5.1 system, the L/R's are not balanced and over power the others--so he doesn't use them for HT, just audio? I tried to post a link--but I don't have my 10 posts in yet. It was on...

    Best Bookshelf Speaker

Thanks Lousiville Fan and LanceJ. I think I've been swayed towards Swan Divas, but I'll continue to research. LanceJ--I like your comment about the bipolar and dipolar, makes a lot of sense

    Swan Diva/AV123/Athena/Boston Acoustics/Polk/Infinty/BIC... HELP

Thanks Stephen and cogden for the input. Stephen, I'm not that advanced in audio, why would I want a custom tune of 22hz? Does it have to do the the cross over point? What would be the crossover point if I'm getting Swan Divas 5.1s? shockemags, sorry for the mini-jack of the thread--but...

    Swan Diva/AV123/Athena/Boston Acoustics/Polk/Infinty/BIC... HELP

Since I'm a newbie trying to select my first set of HT speakers, this thread has been VERY informative. Seems like the ideal is Swan Diva with an SVS sub. My only question on SVS is what's the best way to go, with the round 20-39 PCi or square PB12-NSD?

    Best Bookshelf Speaker

JustPlainNuts, Sorry I don't have any advice for you, I still researching to get my first system. LanceJ, How would you rate BA to Def Tech? I see BA has an affordable VR1 floorstanding speaker, whereas Def Tech does not have much in the unpowered, unbipolar format.

Hi, new to this Forum--CNet Reviews, new HT system

It makes a lot of sense Bob--I appreciate your time. Yes I did like the Def Techs I listened too. In the showroom the bipolar towers did fill the room with a "richer" sound, because I did listen to the Procinema series too--I image they sound much like the the Studio Monitor series. I'm not a...

Hi, new to this Forum--CNet Reviews, new HT system

Bob, Yes it does make sense and thanks for your reply. I see now I wasn't clear what I meant by a concert DVD, I meant one with audio and video. I would assume it will have much more complex sound than the typical movie correct? I'm still stunned by your first reply, I'm actually...

Has any one tried the updated DMP-BD10A? It's on my list to get so far. I like that it plays CDs too.

Hi, new to this Forum--CNet Reviews, new HT system

Bob, Joseph, and Robert, Thanks for you input, I really do appreciate it. Bob, Thanks for the tip on the bipolars, I really don’t have room to move them forward, so now I’m thinking of going to the Def Tech, Mythos Five floor standing speakers. SVS circular powered subs sound...

Hi, new to this Forum--CNet Reviews, new HT system

How does everyone rate the Cnet reviews? I look for reviews on as many sites as possible, but what I like about Cnet is that they give a numeric rating, so if you looking for, say an AV receiver, you can compare all the ratings within your price range. I've been doing a lot of research for my...
