Standalone players: HD-DVD leads by 4:1

I doubt either format will be going anwhere for quite some time. They both have a fairly solid base and I have little doubt there will be many non format- neutral studios in the future. Why did I choose Blu-Ray? In one word: capacity. A BD50 can hold twice the information the best HD DVD can...

Planet Earth: The Complete Series Reviews (HD DVD & BD)

I watched the entire series on Blu-Ray this past weekend and was in awe of the quality of this production and the clarity of the presentation. This is definitely a show-piece application, given so many of the images are simply jaw-dropping. Some of the steadi-cam HD helicopter shots over...

Anyone Else Looking Forward to The Queen on Blu Ray?

I think this is a film that deserves HD treatment for a lot of reasons. Helen Mirren, 'nuf said. The insight into a tumultuous time in world history, brought to life through stunning costume design, set decoration and location footage. This one has a high repeat value for me.

Planet Earth: The Complete Series Reviews (HD DVD & BD)

I'm in shock! My local Best Buy actually had three Blu-Ray versions in stock this morning and they'll price match Target at $66.99. So, I'll be picking this one up during lunch:) Can't wait to see this in HD, since I've been watching on standard satellite for weeks! This will be a great anchor...

Anyone Else Finding SD-DVD lacking after life with HD DVD/Blu-ray?

I'm definitely finding DVD lacking after enjoying the handful of titles I now have on Blu-Ray. I watched an upconverted 1080i DVD Superbit version of my favorite movie "Lawrence of Arabia" last night and although watchable, there were some scenes with halos and the occasional artifacting that...

    Walmart HD-DVD Impact

I sincerely doubt the average HT enthusiast will want a $100 HD player on the shelf next to the $3,800 1080p 60" LCD wall-mounted monitor purchased less than a year ago. I think consumers, even Wal Mart ones have more smarts than that. For non-enthusiasts, what's the point when the DVD player...

Anyone Else Looking Forward to The Queen on Blu Ray?

I can't wait for this stylized, extremely well-acted historical drama to come to my favorite home theater tomorrow! Only ten short years ago the world was shocked by the tragic death of a world icon and philanthropist, Princess Diana. Helen Mirren's Oscar-winning role as Queen Elizabeth and...

Why do I get the impression Blu Ray is "winning?"

Personally, I think the HD format will far surpass laserdisc, which had a number of very unattractive qualities. It was analog, large, often on multiple discs that had to be flipped. No recording capability (that would be some drive!), to mention only a few problems. True, laserdisc did surpass...

    Lack of second-tier titles.

I doubt that the studios are reluctant to release second-tier titles, it's simply a matter of economics. We've reached a crossover point where the display hardware and media are actually better than the source masters. The studios want to issue recent titles that make HD content shine until...

Official Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray player thread

If you see multi-colored dots on your screen during disc loading rather than a Windows-like hourglass, you'll know you have the latest firmware. If not, no worries. The upgrade is very simple as long as you follow the downloaded instructions carefully and make sure your CD is finalized. Nero...
