My first physical media purchase goes back to Super 8. It was the Buster Keaton short "Cops". As a kid, I discovered the family movie projector and starting playing our home movies. When I saw an advertisement in a magazine to buy films, I purchased "Cops" which was the only one I could...
It's funny that this thread turns up now as I just saw her recently in an episode of The Fugitive - from the final season (IN COLOR) - "The Blessings Of Liberty".
I wonder if the shorter-lived series on the list will be complete sets.
I would consider getting Martial Law because I enjoy watching Sammo Hung, but I remember the 2nd season being pretty bad. Also, I remember liking Petrocelli, but I haven't seen it since it was on-the-air and would wonder...
Mark, watch for Laura's facial expressions when Vicky speaks French. Absolutely priceless! Speaking of facial expressions, I just finished the subplot where Maggie Evans escapes from the mausoleum after her memory returns of Barnabas' evil ways. The expression on Barnabas and Willie's faces when...
Thanks Mark - nice shot of Virginia Vestoff.
I finished episode 540 -- these 1968 episodes are quite fast moving - they throw a lot at us. I didn't even remember the bit about Maggie and Josette's earrings, and I was amused by the BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN homage with the blind Sam Evans and Adam...
Ok, I found a rarity - some actual intentional humor in a Dark Shadows scene:
It's episode 501 - where Adam escapes to Collinwood and surprises Carolyn and Elizabeth. He blurts out the word 'music' and Carolyn turns on the radio in hope of calming him down. The radio plays some really cheesy...
Paul, I think you're right about the storyline being a little "far out", because DS basically updated the classic gothic and horror stories that viewers knew and loved and this was unfamiliar territory for many of them. I also remember reading somewhere that the audience didn't like Frid going...
I watched HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS recently and generally enjoyed it, but have to agree with Brian's comments about the pacing being off. I wouldn't want to introduce someone to DS based on this movie because I think they'd be confused by the storyline as it is presented here, but the film was...
There's only 2 shorts that are duplicated in both sets, so they're both worth getting :)
"Becoming Charley Chase" is a comprehensive set in so far as it traces his history starting with his years with Mack Sennett, shows his comic development with his 1 reel Jimmy Jump series, has a few of his...
These are the 6 titles that are not on either the Kino or All Day Entertainment's "Becoming Charley Chase" sets:
BE YOUR AGE
THE CARETAKER'S DAUGHTER
CHARLEY MY BOY
THE UNEASY THREE
WHAT PRICE GOOFY
MAMA BEHAVE
I would have liked to seen the very funny TELL 'EM NOTHING included in this...
Mark, I can answer this question! :)
I'm still reading this thread from time to time, but I've just been very busy. Yes, I reported on last year's Fest and no, I'm not there this year. I figured there would be a nice tribute to Jonathan Frid.
Thanks Bill and Charles for the reports!
Scott,
I agree. I think that was handled very well - acknowledging the issues without really taking a stand. Burton seems fascinated with the era and does a good job of taking us back there. There's no reason the movie should be as insular as the TV series, because Burton, unlike Curtis...
Thoughts on the movie (no spoilers)
First, I'm glad I didn't see Scott's spoiler review as there were some nice surprises in the movie.
Second, I'm glad my worst fears that this was going to be a comic take on HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS were off-base.
Third, I'm glad my second worst fear that this...
Oh my!
I came on this forum tonight because I just got mail today from Dark Shadows about some upcoming events. It's been awhile since I've been here and have been catching up on all the posts - then I see the news about Jonathan's passing. My heart just sunk!
Jonathan was scheduled to appear...
Hi Scott,
Thanks for the heads up! I also got the MPI flyer. That is a great price, and of course, once it is discontinued, the price will skyrocket on ebay and other sites.
I'm glad to hear about the Director's Cut of NIGHT OF DARK SHADOWS. i have never actually seen the film, but I've read the story about the cuts and it kind of scared me off of it. I've seen HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS a couple of times.
I'm looking forward to seeing both of these films on DVD.
Funny you should ask, Mark. I just finished it last night.
But before I get into that - catching up on this thread:
Andy - thanks for the link to BATTLESTAR GALACTICA's second season - it was an interesting read. I am fascinated on how and why changes are made to TV shows. Back in the...
I finished Disc 2 of the Revival Series --
It's interesting how they meld old events - Barnabas' Treatments - The Treatments not working - Carolyn getting bit - the costume party and Phyllis Wick all in the matter of 2 episodes. Yet, none of this ever feels rushed.
Now Vickie's in the 18th...
Scott,
Actually I did mean why Barnabas of the present does not recall Victoria having been with him in 1795. Sorry I didn't communicate that better.
My point was she should have changed history enough where Barnabas would remember her as the governess for Sarah and Daniel who was wrongly...
Mark, if Dan Curtis went with a different storyline for the revival show, I'd bet some of those same fans would complain that he was abandoning tradition, so i think it was a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation, and he went with what worked before. I'm all right with it, but if we...
Scott and Mark, I understand where you're coming from with not liking the Maggie/Roger affair, but I was ok with it. I guess I liked the fact that they threw a curveball into the story because, so far, this is basically looking like a remake of HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS. Please don't take that as...
Mark,
I like that Barnabas line too. The interplay between Barnabas and Vickie is great in these few episodes after her return. With him not knowing what she knows, Barnabas is at his paranoid best.
Scott,
Count me in also as someone who prefers Grayson Hall as the Countess over Julia (but I...
Hi folks - I just came back from my trip yesterday (thankfully getting out before the storm) and, by request, here are some thoughts about the DS festival.
Basically, it took place at the Marriott Hotel in Brooklyn and there was a big ballroom where all programs are located and a couple of rooms...
Tim,
Not only just the "Beginning" episodes, but it seems only up to Collection 4 is available for streaming. And even with disks, they are missing many of the later episodes (the reason I stopped using Netflix to watch the show). As you know, Netflix is changing their plan. If you're...
Halelulah! I didn't think a set like this would ever come out in Region 1.
I'm glad to see that the films seem to be offered in chronological order. I am also excited that there are foreign-language versions included as I have never seen them before. "Los calaveras" was mentioned. I...
