Looking for a new Blu-Ray player that will play all my old DVDs (PAL, Divx, etc.).

Greetings all; Back in the heady days of the 2000's, I used to be quite the DVD enthusiast. I had an Oppo DV-981HD that I used to play all manner of discs from around the world (and the internet). Then I had kids, moved to a different state, yadda yadda yadda, you've heard the story, I'm...

    Blu-Ray Player for AVCHD

Greetings; I've recently started to think about getting a blu-ray player, largely because I have a Canon HD video camera that uses the AVCHD format. I have a large collection of family videos taken in the last year, and it occurred to me recently that a cheap blu-ray player would be a very...

    DVD player suggestions please

I've had an Oppo 981 for just over a month and haven't had any problem playing burned DVDs. It seems to play just about anything. I've converted a few VHS tapes to DVD and it's played DVD+R and DVD-RW media without a hitch. It's even played one very messed-up commercial DVD that I own which I've...

    Region Free DVD Player (2007)

It sounds like your old DVD player may have been region-free, but was not converting PAL video to NTSC so your TV could display it properly. The good news is that nowadays, a lot of cheap DVD players seem to include a PAL-to-NTSC converter. I have no idea why this is more economically...

Is everybody excited about the new Oppo 980?

Note that on their website, they say that the 981 is "best" for PAL-to-NTSC conversion, even though the other models do it. I recently bought a 970 and had to return it because I was getting "jerky" playback on PAL discs, like frames were being dropped. I had the same problem on my old...

    Oppo

It depends on the native resolution of your TV. My TV is 720p and, like you, I see almost no difference between 720p and 1080i, but a distinct difference between 480p and 720p.

Is everybody excited about the new Oppo 980?

Thanks for that insight. That must be why Oppo puts it in their high-end products, huh?

Is everybody excited about the new Oppo 980?

What are the advantages to HDMI 1.2? According to the Oppo website, the 981 will still offer the best PAL playback, so I'm happy I went with that model. The 980 also does not appear to include the much-coveted Faroudja chip.

iPod docking, connecting to Marantz SR5600

I have no idea what sort of connector is on the front of that receiver, but the cheapest product is probably a cable with 1/8" plugs, or a 1/8"-to-RCA connector, depending on what you need to plug it into. Alternatively, there are a wide variety of Ipod docks that allow you to charge the...

One more time -- PAL playback (NTSC TV)

It looks like my problem was the "Video Mode". It's set to "Video1" by default but needs to be "Video2" for PAL playback. Much nicer now. I haven't had a chance to watch an entire PAL movie since I made the change, but the bits I have watched seem a lot clearer and smoother.

One more time -- PAL playback (NTSC TV)

I'm still on a quest for the ultimate multi-standard DVD player. I live in the States and have an NTSC TV (40" Sony Bravia LCD). For the last year, I've been using a Toshiba SD-3990 DVD player. It plays everything I've put in it, and the PAL playback quality is quite good. The only...

Any good dvd players for < $75 ?

I bought a Toshiba last year for about $60 that I've been very happy with. It plays everything I've put in it and I've been happy with the picture quality, even on a 40" LCD TV. It's got component output, I'm not sure about optical. I have a few minor quibbles about the remote or the interface...

Best upsampling multi-region DVD player (or, best multi-region DVD player, period)

So should I assume that nobody here watches PAL discs on an NTSC TV besides me?

Best upsampling multi-region DVD player (or, best multi-region DVD player, period)

[EDIT] I just got off the phone with Oppo technical support and he has told me that the chipset in the 970 does not support 2:2 pulldown, thus the choppy motion on PAL DVDs. The 981 does support 2:2 pulldown, although he didn't explicitly guarantee that I would never experience another case...

Your dvd-audio & sacd players are now (unofficially) "quaint"

People didn't buy quadrophonic in the 70s; why would they buy surround today? What percentage of potential CD buyers even have the hardware necessary to listen to surround sound?

Your dvd-audio & sacd players are now (unofficially) "quaint"

I think the difference here is that the upscale audio products in question required content to be mastered in their respective formats. You're quite right that there will always be a small market willing to pay a premium for all kinds of high-end audio equipment, but succeeding with a whole new...

    PAL/NTSC Conversion question

Greetings all; This isn't technically a "Home Theater" question but I'm hoping that this is still a good forum for this sort of question. I was directed here from one of my favorite DVD review sites, DVD Beaver (which features lots of reviews of PAL and other non-Region-1 discs). I...
