It used to be the other way around. Back in the 60s, a cockney regular on Doctor Who was forced to start speaking the Queen's English (or BBC English) part way through the shooting of her second story. In Hong Kong, the predominate Cantonese dialect was snubbed out of cinema in the late 60s in...
Aside from writing for a really despicable newspaper, is Moore forgetting (perhaps not) that Connery spoke with a Scottish accent, and Lazenby with an Australian accent?
I find Moore more sleazy, more leering. I can understand women falling for or being attracted to Connery's tiger like nature, but Moore is too lizard like at times.
I actually showed that scene recently for a film class, and the students actually cried RAPE! literally.
To be fair, I can see where they are coming from, the scene was shown in isolation, but I don't think that's the intention of the scene, its supposed to be a seduction if a bit of a...
With special regard to the Lugosi and Hammer sets
Did Universal offer fully corrected repressings and are these likely to be what turns up in a order?
Also, if a set is faulty, can it still be ripped to make backup DVD-Rs? Apologies if this breaks the rules, I'm not talking about pirating...
I fancy going to see this, mainly for the novelty of seeing Holmes on the big screen. It sound cheesy and yet unconventional, so if I have to see one dumb action fest, it may as well be this one.
And i expect to be pleasantly surprised.
Somewhat typically, some people are just wound up about...
Having seen an episode, I don't this this new show is too bad. Kinda pointless (not a term I throw around regarding remakes) but hardly worth pointless and rude vitroil its been getting from some commentators. Not like doesn't have to equate with hate.
I tend to get into this discussion on kung fu film sites. The quality control of nearly very company distributing HK movies, from Dragon Dynasty to Joy Sales, is poor but everyone tells me I'm complaining too much.
I don't think quality of an original should bar a remake. If they are going to remake it, so be it, just make an enjoyable film in the process!
And McKellan a "non actor"? How is somebody a non-actor? You turn up, say the lines, you're an actor, whether you're Humphrey Bogart or Tor Johnson...
The trouble with making a new version of something like The Prisoner, is that the original was such a unique combination of elements that the new version cannot help but be like New Coke.
But I'll give this new version a go. Mckellan and Caviziel are good actors, its not like they cast Keanu...
I'd like to see a British horror set, perhaps containing
Night of the Demon (the current one costs more then an Icons Set!)
Creeping Flesh (currently OOP)
Creatures The World Forgot
Corruption (I THINK this one is Columbia...)
I'll try and think of some more!
I'm a huge fan of Glen Erikson, and I'm very pleased that he's one of the few DVD reviewers to bother checking 50s films for widescreen matting. That said, he does have a slightly confusing habit to "follow the credits" - ie. do the credits matte for wide? This is why he thinks IT Came From...
Depends on the films. House of Wax and It Came From Outer Space should be full frame - although the latter was shown theatrically wide, it was shot for academy. Creature From The Black lagoon should be widescreen
Quick question: on the end credits of this Blu Ray, does the film play the James Bond theme, as did the old DVDs, or does it play the instrumental medley of the Bond and Thunderball theme, which is how the soundtrack album does, as does the old UK TV prints.
I think the whole idea of charging double the usual price for a DVD, and then to produce the result on a format that is known to be extremely tempremental, is a very dodgy practice, and a spit in the face to people who have invested in the genuine products over the past decade. I'm all for...
Its probably the best remake of the decade - in that its actually gripping and intense in a way the weak tea originals were not. Still has its silly bits but yeah, a good effort.
Bring on more remakes like this I say!
A bit off topic but:
Disney's original 101 Dalmations was, according to records, original released theatrically HARD MATTE at 1.66:1. Subsequent theatrical reissues were full frame, as are the DVDs. Was the film animated in conventional academy (as opposed to open matte) and then did the studio...
